MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear seal mod on 1275 crankshaft, Mk2

How about drilling the rear main cap for a tiny bore capilliary pipe so that it runs into the gap round the scroll seal? Connect it up via a collector canister and a tapping right into the intake manifold so that it draws the oil off under any light throttle loading? Migh even work if you used the oil intake link from the gauze to the pump as your source of negative pressure if the capilliary was small enough.

Or use an evacusump system like i do.

Im doing the evac on mine, but Im taking from the fuel pump blob area instead of the front timing cover.

Intresting thought rob, I like it....the only thing Id fear is the rear main cap failure, theres alot going on in that perticular small area

The holes are already there in the area where the slinger is just forwards of the scroll seal. Big enough holes to slip bundy tube through them but they are not quite far enough to the rear for what I intended.

Anyone got a camera and a rear cap handy?

Here is the rear main from the 1275 that blew the sump contents in the motorway services after S50. There are 2 drainage holes from the area between the bearing and the scroll area. Rearwards of that area is where someone (factory?) ground away a section of the scroll face to aid drainage. If that was replaced with a thin bore tube, such as the copper tube for the vac advance, then it could have the oil pulled away by the vac from the inlet manifold. A sealed catch tank would allow a certain amount to be collected before the tank overflowed without creating too large an air gap that would affect the fueling.

Any thoughts?

Rob, I like the idea except for the fact that you'd be pulling oil out of the sump. If you could combine the vacuum idea with an oil seperator where the oil could be returned to the sump and only a minimal amount of vapor would be lost then I think it would be great. Would certainly cut down on oil leaking past the scroll.

Can't recall ever seeing the ground-away part of the cap extension. I would prefer to see all surfaces in close contact to the scroll to help make a seal... not see parts ground away.

Unless someone knows better (it's been a while since I've had an Aseries apart...)

Bill, when I think about the amount of oil on the floor of the garage and on the driveway it makes me think that there is so little actually passing through that area that I might be able to collect merely a 1/4 pint after a few hours of hard running. certainly, the car didn't need more than a pint over 500 miles. the thoery is that any oil collected in the can would've been lost overboard anyway.

Has anyone got a rear cap off a standard car to show us?

Rob, what I'm concerned about is the possibility of pulling out more oil than would normally leak past the seal because of the vacuum. For that reason I'd want a recovery system of some sort.

Presumably the section of pipework from the gauze filter head to the block has quite a flow on it and a small pressure drop over ambient. Since the bore of pipe needed to draw oil off the rear scroll is teeny-tiny, could you get away with tapping into this riser to create your draw on the rear scroll without either reducing the sump contents or creating a 'vapour lock' (if you know what I mean) in the riser?

Just stripped another 1275 A-series and the rear bearing cap has the same cut-out in it.

Has anyone tried the rear seal kit from JLH? I guess it is based on the Maestro type.
