MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replace 1500 Clutch Release Arm Pivot Pin

1500 midget Clutch Release Arm Pivot Pin

Item 17 http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29290

This pin has fallen out. I have not had the opportunity to put the car on a ramp yet.

I know this interference fit, so no point in putting the old pin back.

A few questions.

I understand that fitting a 5/16 bolt is a better long term solution than a new pin. Do you agree?

If using a bolt, is there room to fit it from above without removing the gearbox?

If not is it straightforward to fit a bolt from the bottom, and a lock nut from the top?

I presume it is possible to put a pin or bolt into the housing but for it not to go through the release arm.

How easy / difficult is it to ensure that the release arm hole is in the right place? I assume a combination depressing the clutch and putting a tapered punch or a star screwdriver up from the bottom should align it?

I found mine was missing when i took mine out last year fit new pin and new bushes parts 16 /18 which made it a good fit, also found push rod and pin badly worn so changed them at the same time.No idea if you could fit a bolt in situ.Where you getting any clucth judder when driving.

Years ago l replaced one by dropping a large headed coach bolt down from the top as a temporary fix. It didnt even need a nut on the bottom. Alignment was easy as the leaver / clutch thrust carrier has no where to move to. As is often the case with a satisfactory temporary repair, it remained like that for several years before l next had the gearbox out.

I don't think the proper repair can be done in situ.

As Guy says, the bolt from the top trick works well, mine was run like that for years>

It's impossible to replace the interference ring which taps into the clutch release bearing carrier with the box in place.

You could possibly fit a new pin, but probably the interference ring is so worn, or it's fallen out it won't stay in place.

Go with the bolt bodge.
