MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replacement seat covers

Hi all

Please be gentle this is my first post.

I'm looking to change the seat covers on my 1965 MkIII Sprite over the winter (black with white piping). The black gaffer tape currently holding them together really isn't doing it for me any more I'm afraid.

I can obviously get some from Moss but are they the best on the market? Any info/pointers would be greatly appreciated.
P Turner

Hi P - do put your first name as we like to know it as we're basically nosey :)

Moss seat covers on Moss seats are pretty good quality, and seem hardwearing (one of my cars came with them!), so, if they are the only place, then yes, they are ok. However, as with everything - shop around and see what everyone else offers - and, if you're going to do the whole thing yourself, there's always the option of sourcing the leather and doing it yourself - that way you can get exactly what you want.

Welcome to the board.

Another source would be Austin Healey Spares

I got my Frogeye seat covers from them and am happy with them.

You might like to try PJM Motors http://www.pjm-motors.co.uk/midget_sprite.html
I've no esperience of them but they seem to have a good range of bits.

Thanks for the info.

I think getting ready made covers rather than doing it myself will be the best for me. I'll do some shopping around and see what comes up.

I noticed Moss have just had a sale, so maybe I'll wait for the next one to come along, I am a Yorkshireman after all.

I bought the seat covers for my Midget from PJM. Very good quality. I am really impressed with them. They are also very helpful on the phone if you have questions regarding the fitting of the covers.

I bought new sponges and diaphrams also... much improved :)

PJM get my vote too. Excellent quality, reasonable price and ever so helpful.

I really enjoyed re-covering my seats, it's a satisfying activity and lots of people comment how good the seats look.

On Mark Evans' 'An MG is Born' program he visits PJM and they show him how to re-cover the seats from his MGB. Having watched it the process for doing the midget seats were exactly the same. If you can get hold of a copy to watch, or maybe find the episode on t'internet, you'll have no trouble doing the job. It's also a good winter job because you can do it indoors - no oil or mess. You'll need to get hold of a staple gun and a roll of cling-film.

And like Tony says, a new seat base and diaphragm will make the seat like new.

VSCM301 on the PJM site would be the correct kit for your car, Pete - the early Mk 3 Sprites had that style of bucket seat, ignore PJM's date labels.

Cling film and a staple gun, I'm intrigued?

Sounds like there's going to be some fun evening's in the Turner household!

Don't forget the spray adhesive :)

(I too saw the Mark Evans DVD... it's well worth adding to your DVD collection if you haven't got it already. Trouble is I then wanted A Jaguar is Born, A 4x4 is Born, A chopper is Born, A Racing Car is Born.....etc 'An MG is Born' is the best IMHO, however the cheesy music rivals Campervan Crisis!)

mg owners clube sell seat covers aswell afew items they are cheaper than moss and dont have to be a member not sure if they will have the right type though cirtain things they only go as far back as 1275cc engine.

Got a set from a supplier here but basically they came from M*ss.

They are really good looking covers and ok, I weinied out and had a professional shop install them for me. They didn't charge me much and the look is superb. While they were at it, they cleaned off any rust and repainted the frames for me as well.
Clive Reddin

Assuming that Moss US and Moss UK use the same suppliers, I can vouch for the interior I bought from Moss a couple of years ago. Everything fit beautifully, and I'm quite satisfied with the results.

Another vote for PJM Motors - they actually make the covers not just sell them on - so can make any colour combination/style. Very friendly and helpful.

They did the recovering on mine giving a bit more of a bucket type support to backs.

Pic attached.

Wow Richard, Smart interior.

Really nice, but how do you keep that colour so clean.
Not even any Dalek stains on it!

Guy
(Whatever happened to the Dalek, Greg was just asking)
Guy

Agreed, Guy! That's very nice indeed, Richard.

Gryf,

I chuckle every time I see your Autumn leaf door pulls !

Look better on yours.

Guy,
It still on holiday in Clevedon - Mark is trying to get it to York.

Any offers to move a hydraulic mini suspension pump to York ?

Oh, Richard it must like you! I really assumed that Mark had got it sorted out and deported to the Colonies when he was over in June. That makes me feel guilty for landing you with it now! I guess you could always stick it on e-bay!
