MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replacing Sun Visors

I have purchased replacement visors and rubber clips and would like advice regarding proper removal and re-installation. First, how do I remove the visor from it's holder and second, the visor clips are attached with some sort of rivet - which I am unsure of how to remove.

Thanks
Barry

Hi, Barry.

I installed my visors a few years ago, so maybe I can help. You need to drill those pop rivets out carefully; meaning, slow speed with a variable-speed drill. Remember that the edge of the windscreen glass is right inside that frame, and you sure as heck don't want to aggravate the glass with the end of a drill bit.

Also, I'd better mention that the replacement rubber clips, although they clip the visor end just fine, don't stand out far enough from the windscreen frame. The visors will hit the header frame clamps before they get to the clips, if you know what I mean.

So what I did was to take the old rubber clips and trim away the "clip" portion, just leaving the flat section that meets the frame. Then I used each as a shim behind the new clips when I reinstalled them with new pop rivets. They work great!

Good luck. Remember that the windscreen frame is aluminum with glass inside it, and you should be okay... ;-)

Gryf, thanks for the info - I really appreciate it (i'm going to use the old clip as a shim per your suggestion). One more question for you please, Did you re-fasten the clips with pop rivets, self-tapping screws or??? Thanks again.
Barry

Can you just use the existing hard ware and slip the new visores over it,

I think Barry's still got the swivel brackets. He's just replacing the visors and rubber clip thingies.

As for fasteners for the clips, I used screws instead of pop rivets. Screws just seemed easier. Whatever you use, just be really careful and don't catch the edge of the glass.

Barry,
Do yourself a favor and buy a baseball cap. The car's visors MIGHT line up with the glare of the sun for a total of ten minutes per day if you happen to be going in the right direction at the right time. The rest of the time they are in the way AND useless.

Thats my belife as well...I got a set of new visors...but a ball cap works much better....that way they dont flap it the wind during a cross wind.

but thats just my take

Oh, you guys...

I replaced my visors because they were missing when I bought my midget, and the windscreen just looked incomplete somehow.

And besides, you can flip them upwards to generate some downforce in corners.

Yeah, airfoil effect!!! ;)

Right, but you've got to be careful. Years of driving with the visors unevenly raised can cause your Midget to sit low on one side, usually the driver's side, due to sustained asymmetrical downforce.

Now you know.

If you want to use pop-rivets to attach the rubber stays, take a short piece of tubing (metal) and use it between the rivet tool and the rivet head in order to get the rivet to settle snugly.

MMMMmmm,

Maybe thats why the seal in my 1st glass windshild broke making the window foggy...lol.
