MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rubber on 6J alloys

I have my eye on a set of 6J Astrali alloys which are coming off a Morris Minor. The guy tells me the offset is right for a midget, but before I go for it, I've got a couple of questionmarks, basically centred around whether 6" is too wide...

1. What size rubber would I need? Something like 175/70? I'm guessing they wouldn't transfer to 6" wide rims?

2. Since I only have bog-standard 1275 power, would the car be over-rubbered on 175s?

If I can get them at a good price, I might get them and store them up until either the tyres on my Rostyles are worn out, or I've upgraded the engine...

As always, thanks in advance for the helpful advice.

6J Minilight replicas with 185/70/13s. Very large rolling radius, though, and I doubt they'd go under standard Midget arches without fouling. The Morris has plenty of room to accept wider rubber without sticking out and the arches don't overhang the top of the tyre much. The Lenham rear arches are cut about 3 inches higher than SWA midgets.

Over-rubbered? Only if you are addicted to chirping the tyres. I would suggest 185/60 tyres. I use these on 6" steel rims on my 72 for autocrossing. Over here they are used on Spec Racer Fords at the race track, so I get free discards behind the tyre truck on race days. Some are DOT legal... My 1275 with a 3.9 can still spin them occasionally, but certainly not by accident on dry pavement ;-) But then, my engine is not exactly "bog standard". Your speedometer will indicate a higher speed than you are really going, but that can help you avoid speeding tickets.

Rob-
What kind of bonnet is that?

Wow Rob, thats one h*ll of a nice midget... in BRG standing next to yours! ;)

We have 5.5" x 13" with 185/70 A021R's on our Minor and they fit very well, but only just. To go to 6" and the lowered ride height would mean different offsets front and rear.

Currently the clearance on the inside of the fronts and the suspension top link is <10mm and they just miss the wing return lip on full bump. At the rear, the inside clearance is fine, but outside of the tyre will catch the wing return lip on full bump in a straight line (cornering moves the axle a few mm laterally, so no problem!!).

I would wonder how a Midget would cope with 6" and no body mods?

Richard. I've just bought a set of 5.5 steels for our Minor (Minor centres and Vauxhall outers).

Got any more pics that you could send so we can drool over what they will look like once the axles have been changed over?

Thanks

Steven. The bonnet is, I think, from Fibresports and called the 'Sebring'.
