MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sierra front wheel assembly on Spridget

(Now I might get myself confused here)

My mate had and idea to adapt the FL front suspension so that it could take a Sierra front wheel assembly so that you could do away with the king pins and have larger brake callipers and discs

Assuming I got this right – has anyone tried this ?

Perhaps David (Billington) might have given this thought or know if it’s not possible

Nigel,

You'd want to look at some of the suspension used on the likes of Locost and some other kit cars and the way they use the Sierra upright.

http://tsx.co.za/wp/category/locost/ for some good pictures.

If that link doesn't work then google for "locost front suspension" and it was the first item in images for "locost front suspension" 2nd item in the list. Maybe it has become suddenly unavailable temporarily.

Hi David thanks for your reply

I don't think my mate knew about those in the link but the adaption would I guess have been that or something similar

I've given up on the idea, initially because some insurance companies might want an engineers report and/or call it a modification

I'm sure the company I'm with now (Peter James) would just accept it as they have with my other modifications at no extra charge or paperwork

My mate soon after the idea had/has personal problems, and I had problems with FL, and as I attract problems I've given up on the idea of getting someone else to do it

Anyway I've bought a small one handed grease gun so I must get my money's worth out of it

If you've got the two top mounts in place for an upper wishbone, and can find something to fit the bottom joint of the sierra upright to the lower bone, then I don't see what would be that difficult about it. In fact is pretty standard kit car fare.

It will be bigger and heavier than the midget stuff, but it removes the need to grease things every 10 minutes and allows a huge range of cheap brakes to be used. Callipers are 25 a side and discs and pads about the same.

I only grease the front (and handbake) every 6 months so it's not that often and I'm sure I didn't do it more than every 6,000 miles on my previous Spridget and didn't get problems (might be wrong, poor memory)

I also pump some grease to front just before the MOT to stop any mention of play by the younger MOT tester

I'm at the stage now where if something is working properly I leave it alone

Hi Nigel since you attract problems feel feel to drop by sometime so you can attract some of mine away from me!

If I set out I probably wouldn't make it to you

I can't even get the computer mouse cover on without a lot of fiddling, mind you it is a fiddly design, I'm sure I'm going to break one of its liitle plastic hooks (if only in spite)

I go out of my way to avoid car troubles, do more than necessary and still problems are visited upon me

When I see my Spridget owning mate now and again he asks what I've done with the car knowing there be "a story" or two

I've certainly done my bit to keep the British economy going

I put in a new brake light bulb once for my neighbour, after spending a good while trying to sort it I found the new bulb had an intermitent fault - when it heated up the filiment would come apart and then when it cooled it rejoined itself to start all over again

And then there was the time . . .
