MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Silencer

Does anyone know if there is a relatively quiet single box silencer available for 1275 midget? Used to have twin box but these no longer listed in north america and too big to bring back from UK as luggage.

Present single box is very loud.

George,

you may want to try an RC40 from (in UK) Magic Midget. It has a bigger bore than standard so you may also need to buy/adapt the pipe from the exhaust manifold, unless of course you already have an LCB?
I've just installed a Maniflow LCB with the RC40 and it sounds fabulous - louder than the standard twin set up which I had previously but I'm informed quieter than a standard single box set up. It's a lovely base sound and I swear the car is actually quicker - but that may be that the exhaust is now louder than the mechanical racket from under the bonnet so I'm driving a bit quicker!
Thoroughly recommend it.

I'm not sure a RC40 would be relatively quiet

exhaust noise is effected by what's up front, the state of tune and yes - servicing, maintenance and repair :)

George as you are asking from Canada and not the UK, it is probably more cost effective to go to an exhaust centre there and see what they can do for you.

Are you in Winterpeg or close by as I can ask a friend in the car trade if he can recommend someone for you of you wish.

Maybe there's a mini parts supplier? Get a RC40 or maniflow silencer from them and some standard mild steel tubing and build your own system.

I'd say Rachels advice was perfect

There must be an exhaust shop locally that could help

What do you mean by "relatively quiet"? The RC40 does still let you know it's there. If you're looking for "out of sight, out of sound, and out of mind" the RC40 is not it.

The MGB rear silencer GEX3249 fits nicely and is quieter than the RC40. It still has the MG burble so if you want dead quiet it's not the one.

IIRC quite a few people fit Harley silencers to Spridgets in the USA.

Talking of silencers, I just replaced the rear bobin mounting for my RC40 on saturday, the previous one went after about 2 years. The new one lasted 6 hours and 100 miles before breaking. Problem is that I can't remember where I bought it. Now that really is CR*P merchandise.

As i have said countles times those rubber thingy's are useless under pulling load.
Use them under compression and they will las for ages.
Look for a MGB mounting

I can find no mention of GEX3249 when I search the MOSS or any of the other on-line catalogues. Is that the right part number?

Gary, Halfords do a bobbin, it's round, about an inch long with a 5/16"unf stud comming out of each end, used to be 99p. It's in the exhaust mountings section. I used them on the Caterham side exhaust.

Rear Exhaust Box - (5 Piece System) - GEX3429

cross referencing of parts and numbers are required - the suppliers catalogues/web pages have typos too
Nigel At

its marked as being for a Mini possibly more than 99p

GEX7251 - EXH BOBBIN CO95

or better with longer thread one side from Onno's favorite B bracket - GEX7493 - BOBBIN EXH LONG THR

plus add a couple GEX7250 - WASHER INSULATING

what me had exhaust problems and been through a gew fixing kits, no never
Nigel At

Yep, I'm a fat finger expert, should be GEX3429 - sorry!
Paul Walbran

I've doubled up on the bobbins - just in case; the lhs bracket needs a bit of tidying...

Jeremy 3

...and how most people see the RC40. The foglight was added to give the impression the silencer needed to have that kink to avoid it!

Jeremy
Next time mount a U profile to the boot floor and mount the bobins in compression
Onno Könemann

Cheers Onno,

I'm presuming these bobbins should be compressed horizontally rather mounted as currently, vertically; is that the right assumption?

Jeremy

Jeremy,

I assume Onno is referring to the style fitted to R/B MGBs. Moss catalogue

http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=11985&SortOrder=6

items 5 - 9

I dont know if the size is suitable for a Midget but the bobbins are in compression.

Yep that is it.
Even when the bobin breaks the exhaust stays in place.
