MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Single Su on 1275 Midget
Does anyone know what is involded in fitting a single 1 3/4" hif style Su to a 1275 midget? I have heard of clearance problems with the carb dashpot and the bonnet? Manifolds needing machined to 20 deg?

You want to have a look at the "Titan Manifold - Silly Question" thread on M&S General. It's in the 15 June batch. Then lots of other stuff in the Archives. It's easy to do, so long as you get a good manifold of about 15 deg pitch, HIF, heatshield, and all the spacers and clippy things. The last lot usually come all together from ebay.

ok after reading all the archived stuff last night, i have one question. Does anyone have one of these Titan Manifolds for a midget for sale? none currently on ebay.
M Slater
I thought Maniflow (sp?) made one. Isn't that mentioned in Vizard's book? Charley

I used MG Metro manifold (ally). A

I've got a Maniflow one. It's nice, but it's for a Mini - no clearance problem. Unlike the Titan, it has a crank upward. Haven't tried fitting it anywhere.

I have the Titan intake and HIF 44 SU. Apparently, the Titan intake is not being made anymore. I had problems with mine (bought new). Mine had a steel pipe cast into the aluminum manifold which served as a manifold heater (heated by the engine coolant). The pipe leaked. And I had coolant and rust in the combustion chambers. I finally had to bypass the pipe, plug both ends, and seal around the pipe/manifold joint points. I never understood how there COULDN'T be a problem like that, due to the different rates of expansion for steel and aluminum. The pipe should have been made of aluminum. I wonder if that's why it's not being made anymore?

Having a few Metros in our fleet which use the same steel pipe in the manifold, it is not a problem we have encounterd, and they are 20+ years old. Rusty, yes - epcially as most owners here use straight water in the cooling system - but not leaking at the joint. Shame if they aren't being made any more, they save getting a dimple in your bonnet if using the Metro one enthusiastically. Maybe it was just old-fashioned lack of demand.

Take it from me, the Metro ones do corrode badly and leak! The steel tube is really thin. I removed what was left of the rusty tubes with a hacksaw blade to cut into the tube lengthways then gripped it in a vice and twisted them out. I replaced them with stainless tubes glued in place. All not really necessary according to Vizard, who doesn't advise heating the manifold. Cheers John

I never bothered connecting the hot water to heat the manifold; unless you use the car in arctic conditions, heating the manifold isn't necessary... at very worst, you may need residual choke for a little longer, but then the ex manifold does a good heating job too. (I cam-coated the manifold to reduce this heating effect as well.) A

Re: coating the manifold, I've had my Maniflow inlet chromed - it looks completely bling and cost me £40 just to chrome it, but it's worth it.

Just fitted 1 3/4" SU and a Maniflow inlet. Bolts straight on. I had to do a bit of filing on the manifold and make a bracket fot the trottle cable. Bonnet closes OK. Just needs to go on rolling road for setting up.
