MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Slow/static indicators

I am afflicted with slow indicators on the Frogeye, but they're only really problematic when the headlights are on too. At idle they stay on constantly, and flash with increasing vigour as the revs rise.

The archives suggest this means a new flasher unit is in order - is that correct for these symptoms, or might it just be a poor connection? If so how do I troubleshoot? I have an alternator and AFAIK the battery is healthy.

If a new flasher is needed - what type and from where? I could use a decently loud click as it's too easy to forget to cancel!

Thanks as always.

Would suggest you try a few other things before replacing the flasher. I have the same problem but only on the right hand side; indicator wont work when headlight on, but the left always works fine!
I havent fixed it yet but have been advised that it is most likely the earth, bulbs, or connections that are not 100%, As it improves when you increase revs, IMHO I think this is more likely the answer.

Agree with Graham on solution root. But might be worth just swapping teh flasher with a mate first... Mine went on teh way to LeMans last year and had similar symptons.

However if you want a loud clicker you need one of these... Sorry can't do tiny urls

I have a similar one on my Frog and I never forget to cancel the indicator for long! Just cuts in to the cable for the indicator light if I remember correctly.

For years I had slow indicators, dim glowing headlamps, slow wipers etc etc. After I threw a hand full of relays under the bonnet and changed from 2 old fuses to 10 new ones all equipment works brighter, quicker etc.

The old electrics lose a lot before they deliver the juice to the indicators, wipers etc.

My garage told me that flasher cans get faster with age rather than slower which was the opposite to what I expected and I took their advice and changed the flasher can.

So if the garage (actually an MOT test station, tester) is right than it's not a flasher can that's causing your problem.

The first new can was a bit of dud and I had it replaced free of charge.

I've decided the easiest solution is to just keep the right pedal nailed at all times ;)

Jordan - On the frog eye with a generator, the voltage is going to drop when the car is idling. In addition to that, you probably have a whole bunch of marginal connections throughout the car. I would suggest that you start looking, first at connections right back to the battery terminal, then follow up with power connections from the battery terminal outward. See the article, Electrical Connection Preparation in the Other Tech Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps Cheers - Dave
