MG Midget and Sprite Technical - tacho

hi all.
my mkii midget had allready been converted to neg earth when i bought it. it came with a neg earth tacho which does not give a very good reading. when you turn ignition on it goes right round clock and back again a few times as fuel pump ticks.reads higher when ticking over and cannot adjust it down any lower.the number on face is rvi 2340/01. does anyone know if this would be the correct one or wheather i need a different one.
regards bob.

Bob,
according to Terry Horler’s book, on page 78, it has the original rev counter codes as RV1 2401/00B

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=RQK6R2Y3SZ8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=Original+sprite+and+Midget&hl=en&ei=keiZTqSYN46v8QPrv8HoBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

but that was for +earth

have you got an electronic ingnition fitted?
Nigel Atkins

hi nigel,
no electronic ignition.
trebor

fair enough

it sounds like with yours there might be a wiring issuse somewhere or it's not the right one or faulty

RV1 2(four, three) 0/01 (2430/01) shows as for -earth for Mk3 GAN4 on page 97 of Terry Horler's book
Nigel Atkins

Bob. When you say you can't adjust it any lower, how are you adjusting it? The only way I know of adjusting them is via a screw through the back, but you have to take the tacho out of the car to move the screw so it's a bit hit and miss. You can't tell if you've got it right until you put it back and test it against a remote tacho attached to number one plug lead.

these might help

have look at - (MG MGB Technical 1/08/2011 & 2/08/2011) - replacing RVI/2401/00B tacho with RVI/2430/00

hi bernie.
there is a hole in the back of tacho where you can put small screwdriver in and adjust while car is running. thats the same as on my bgt as well.

Bob. I found it difficult to do it in situ, but it's obviously doable if you've managed it. I'll have another go at mine because it's still a bit out.
