MG Midget and Sprite Technical - The 1500 EFI project (again!)

Hi folks, hope you are all keeping well.

An update and a couple of pictures for those on here that aren't on FB. New inlet manifold is finally finished and on. Pretty damn pleased with the look of it - I hope it performs too! I fired it up very briefly - but with no exhaust silencers on, it was rather anti-social, so knocked it off straight away! x-D

Pro engine builders (Peter/Willy), if you are still about, what are your thoughts on running it with no air filter? Space is really chuffing tight. I am thinking of chopping a bit out of the wing (black marker pen line) to get something on there if I have to.

Cheers,
Malc.

Malc, why dont you replace the coolant tank?
Ive done so too on my 1500 body and have a K&N filter straight behand the grill and hosed it up to the airbox to get cool air in.
No cutting needed and clean the filter once a year, oil it and re-use it again.

Hi Arie - yeah, having slept on it and pondered it more I think the way forwards would be to move the coolant tank to the other side with a pipe across the top of the rad to link it up. That frees up the space for a big filter much like yours.

Bloody coolant tank always gets in the way and has moved more times than I care to remember!!

Cheers,
Malc.

Been there! LOL!!

New big ass cone filter and hose on order to copy your setup. Coolant tank will go wherever there is space left!!

Thanks for the inspiration Arie.

Sorry for this Malcom LOL!!

Eventualy got so fet up with the cooler reservoir always being in the way of my plans I decided to strip the ECU, electris, fuseboxes out of the engine room into the top of the paasenger footwell.
That gave me all the room to place a cooler reservoir without being in the way of anything.
And ended with putting the (gel)battery there too...
And the brake servo...

Photo one before relocating all the elctric stuf in the footwel

Photo 2 relocated the elctrics and covered all holes with ductape LOL!!

The midget is an ongoing project, Im always thinking of what to improve or tidy up. :)

That's one way to do it!!! :-D Loving your work - but I will only be getting the welder out like that as a very last resort.

I know the feeling about ongoing project... the EFI thing has been five years in development to get to this point. But I'm getting to the point where I am happy it is finished.

Cheers,
Malc

Oops... I may be about to compound my packaging issues with a rather over specced air filter!!

Thread drift
How do yo find you integrated beans on toast maker in the photo, I think ours managed one round
timmyk

That is a thread drift!!

Mine is the toast n egg and I must have had it 10 years and use it regularly. Boiled eggs and toast is my go to weekday breakfast.

Back to car stuff, filter fits pretty nicely in the space. The silicone hose was a mis-purchase and not right for what was needed. That has been chopped into small pieces and then thrown in the bin already!!

So filter now mounted with a (slightly shonky) bit of bracketry and will get some Flexi ducting to join the two up.

Cheers,
Malc

Looking good Malc

Ive only spotted now that you have completly removed the rubberbumper construction from the enginebay.
That was quite a job!
A lot more space now.
I took the easy way and just cut off the topends behind the grill.

I like your suspension brace, makes me think again of adding something like that in mine.
After putting the K in but not on the original enginebracketspots I always wandered if I should make something to bring back rigidity there....

A bit of 70mm flexi ducting and we have a functioning air filter - woohoo! It took a while, but it has worked out so damn nicely and no wing chopping required!

Also have a plan for the expansion tank, so it is really coming together.

Re: bumper mounts, when I bought the car the shell was so rotten I had to cut the mounts, along with most of the inner wings and triangular bit out. So I wasn't going to waste time & money to add unneeded steelwork back into the car. I always planned to de-bumper.

Re: the strut, it certainly does something. With it loosely fitted, if you jack up the front (either both wheels by jacking under the cross member, or a single wheel jacking on the sill) you can see the ends of it moving as the chassis flexes! The brackets could be better, they aren't very stiff themselves, just spare bits I had lying round from triangulating my front dampers.

Cheers,
Malc.

Malcolm

Thanks for that last photo, looks like your strut could be in the way of my coolingfan (sucks so therefore on inside radiator)
Will do some messurements on saturdayto see whats possible.
