MG Midget and Sprite Technical - tightening my rear end

(no not a response to too much curry!)
My midget is currently lying upside down on a spit and hence perfect for any work I am planning on the back axle.
I have already rebuilt the back axle..
One of reasons for asking is that I recently had a drive in a 1960's car with the same back axle setup as the midget and it seemed to me to be pretty loose at the backend. It could something to do with the car set up of course! I just got to wondering whether it was worth adding a some bits to better locate the rear axle?
(I have to admit to having never driven a Midget, or even been driven in a midget. I have owned a Spit and currently have an elan)
cheers

Most Spridgets with the semi eliptic rear springs handle pretty well in regards to the rear suspension. Tend to be pretty neutral generally even with a rather larger front anti sway bar installed, will understeer in front rather than oversteer from the rear. If you plan on running larger than original tyres then the addition of a panhard rod is a good idea as it will locate the rear axle better side to side and prevent tyre rub in the rear wheel wells when cornering hard. New bushings and spring pads are a good additon and make sure the U-bolts on the axle are tight as a loose u-bolt or worn axle mounting pad can make the rear steer under acceleration and braking. Make sure the dampers are in good condition, either original lever actions or tube type conversions both work well enough. That's about it for a standard car. If you plan on going racing or to some track days then you might consider other changes.

thanks,
One related question, what torque should the U-bolts be tightened to?

everso blooming tight and a bit :(

No actual torque figures available I think

probably best translated as "tight but dont snap the threads"

I tighten mine using a standard 1/2" drive ratchet and deep socket. I estimate that the final torque is around 50 to 60 foot pounds as that's about what I get on the lug nuts with the same ratchet before I put the torque wrench on and finish tightening.

Poly bush
U bolts tight as hell
If you can do without leave the Panhard out (bad with lots of suspention travel)
If you have the cash go for a mumford (frontline rtl)
