MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Timing chain
1275 midget - what do I have to remove to change the timing chain? David |
David Brenchley |
The engine!. Crankshaft pulley, timing chain cover, cam sprocket nut. A hub puller is useful to get the sprockets off. Steve |

Got mine off without removing the engine, but the racer does have a one piece front end. engine mounts loosened off and engine jacked up a few inches. |

You don't have to remove the engine but it's still not an easy job! |

I've recently done it by Steve's method - just! Exhaust manifold of course, and radiator - can't remember whether I took the grille out, but as it happened I didn't need a puller so maybe not. I might have persuaded the top of the tunnel to give me another 1/16", because it was teasingly tight getting the pulley past the cross member. But once you've got the front of the engine jacked into position, it's not bad. The most difficult part is the pulley bolt. I went out and bought the big ring spanner at great cost, but, with some nylon rope down No.1 plughole to jam the engine, it was easy, and well worth it. |

You need to lift the engine quite a way up to get the crank pulley off, so you are nearly all the way to a removal anyway. You can also sort out all those other jobs whilst it's out..like check the state of the clutch! |
