MG Midget and Sprite Technical - turbo midget at the drags

Took the car to the hot rod drags last weekend, having added a 30hp shot of nitrous to liven it up a bit.As usual the main problem was the nut behind the steering wheel ie me!However I managed to hook it up on one run, with 13.5 seconds and terminal speed 102mph.The bad news is that on the next run I broke 1st gear.(SCCR box)managed to get it home on the other 3 gears. So a Winter project, any suggestions as to what I might find when I pull it down?
steve cowling

SWARF
Bad news Steve, out of a matter of interest do they give you 0-60 times ?
Rob Newt

Hi Rob,they don't give you that on the timing slip, but I calculate about 5 secs?
steve cowling

A 13.5 is a VERY respectable run for a midget.

I'd concur that that would give a 0-60 in around 5-5.5 seconds.

Steve, was that at the Pod or at Shakey?

Deborah Evans

Hi Deborah, this was at Shakey on Friday, track was cold, not many cars running,so quite pleased really.
steve cowling

In which case the run is outstanding given that Shakey provides historically poor traction when compared to the Pod (on a good day).

180 bhp nad 5s

?
Anthony Cutler

Sorry Antony, not sure of the Question, the car has about 155 bhp plus 25/30 shot of nitrous.
steve cowling

OK; was guessing 180 bhp and 5s for std 1/4

Nice one Steve :)

155 sounds great without the Nitrous LOL
Don't tell Prop for godsake!
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Thanks Bob,yes i realise I may be cast into the outer darkness!
steve cowling

wow

I needed 280+hp in the civic to pull a 13.1 @ 113mph

I think i need to have a go in your midget :D
PeterJMoore

To late ... Im here with open ears!

I'm impressed since my show room stock 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner with LSD, Torqueflite automatic and 426 c.i. Hemi with an official 425 h.p. (actual about 500) turned a 13.89 at 105 mph. But it did weigh over 4000 pounds.

Nice run. Too bad about first. Did I hear someone say "5 speed"?
Martin Washington

I think I'd pull the head and pistons and inspect them while the engine is out this winter. I'm sure it is a well built engine, but I'm guessing you're at the edge.
Trevor Jessie

Thanks for the nice comments. The engine is 1312cc with forged pistons 8:1CR and a big intercooler. The turbo is a Garrett T2 hybrid with a big compressor, running 15 psi.The box is straight cut, with 7.5 inch clutch. The rearend is Tran X lsd and 4.2 gears,so I was doing about 6700rpm crossing the line. The tyres are Toyo 888,14x185x60 profile. The car weighs about 700 kg or 1550 lbs.
steve cowling

Steve,
what cam are you using?
cheers
Brad
Brad 1380

It's a Piper turbo 2 cam.Peak power is around 6000.
steve cowling

Can't find the cam spec on their website, do you know the duration & lift?
Brad 1380

Thats excellent Steve, just got my car back together again after fitting a 7.5 inch clutch (what a saga!!!), standard was definately not upto the job. :)

Anyway am now running 20 maybe 22 PSI boost and certainly feels like + 150 BHP so based on your figures hopefully that is correct.

Mine however is not a hybrid so I have to rev a little to get max pressure from the Turbo.
Bob Turbo Midget England

Well done Bob,just watch the full load timing though, detoation is the silent killer at this level,as I know to my cost!
steve cowling

Hi Brad,I don't have the cam details to hand,I'll look.Like all turbo cams it's mild, but I use 1.5 ratio rockers
steve cowling

Thanks Steve, what are you using for your engine map?
Brad 1380

The fuelling side is via a blow through SU carb. The ignition is Megajolt.I had it mapped on a RR,setting mixture and then a timing map.At full load it's running around 12:1 AFR and 20 deg timing, light load 15:1 and 35 deg
steve cowling

So are you using the lean mixure bit on the HIF44?, i was going to blank them off.
I've got a base mini turbo map to try first for mine, AF will go via the megajolt aux input & a wideband.
Brad 1380

Hi Brad, assume you've found the turbominis web site-all you ever need to know!Includes the best way to plumb the carb.Cam is a Piper phase 2 turbo, inlet opens 22deg btdc, exhaust opens 69deg bbdc,264deg inlet duration,9.2mm valve lift on 1.28 rocker. What's the rest of your spec.and are you running yet?
steve cowling

Not up & running yet, still making bits to get the SC to fit, intercooler & plubing to do.
Basic spec is 1380, 8.3:1, 256 cam, 1.5:1 rockers, overdriven SC, a beautiful Peter May metro turbo head, recirculating blow off valve, EDIS & Turbo HIF44.

Brad 1380

That is excellent! That cam will be fine,There are a few SC guys on turbominis also.Peter's stuff as always is first class.I live only a few miles from his place and it is very clean! Are you going to drive this car in Germany?TUV will be fun!
steve cowling

Just put it on a uk title and you will be fine.

And want to try it in belgium.......
They won't even let you change a drumbrake mini to the later (safer) disks!

Onno Könemann

No just working here at the moment putting the worlds biggest windfarm in. I live in France, so insurance is going to be a nightmare as they don't like modified cars there.
Brad 1380

Hi Steve and others

This all sounds very good. I am a BIG FAN of forced induction.

Steve I read you have a Megajolt ignition which has been RR tuned. I would love to have a look at it.

Is there a way you can mail it to me. I am fine tuning a SC project and am pretty sure my spark table i way too conservative.

a.o. arnold

I will do my best, but I have no IT skills.Back home in 2 days, will try then.
steve cowling

Steve i would be interested if you don't mind.

Arnold, its actualy all your fault that i have a SC, your web page was the inspiration.
Brad 1380

Hi Brad

I would very much recommend efi instead of the SU. Also does the pulley have enough space in between in the cross member? Anyway looks great. If yu want give me a phone call, I might be of some assistance?

a.o. arnold

Arnold,
the pulley is going to be tight & i will probably have to hack a section out of the cross member, hence my other recent thread re-making a cross brace.
I may go EFI eventually, but want to get the engine running first, so will go with the SU for the moment, unless i come across a turbo spec dellorto.
Thanks for the tel no. i'll keep it handy just in case,

cheers
Brad
Brad 1380

Steve,
many thanks for the map.
