MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Twin 1/12 Su Carbs

Will twin 1 1/2 inch SU Carbs clear a Frogeye bonnet and is a 1275 engine taller than a 948.

A friend of mine has a Frogeye with a 1275 and twin 1 - 1/2 SUs, and it has no clearance problems.

My Frogeyer with 1275 engine, 1.5 SU, maniflow manifold and 45mm K&N filters does not clear the aluminium bonnet. The key to clearance is the manifold. I am sure this has been discussed previously with advice on the correct manifold to avoid a problem - try the archive. Don't know about the engine height but as they are both A Series engines I doubt there is any difference.Peter

1275 engine is taller than the 948cc Frogeye motor.

Peter's advice above re manifolds worth following...

After the discusions we have been having about single HIF carbs only fitting under the bonnet with a Titan manifold it mad me think about twin Carbs..
Also thought that if somebody replied they had twin
1 1/2 cars on a 948 it didnt mean they would fit onto a 1275 and clear bonnet .
So do H4,s clear or HS4,s and what manifolds are recomended ?.
R Mcknight

I always had clearance problems with 1 1/2" SU's on both small and bigger block engines till I changed to a fabricated steel inlet. I think the one I have was made by Janspeed and essentially comes out straight and measures 120mm flange to flange. It's made of brazed tubular steel with little vertical stiffeners and balance tube.

1 1/4s should be good for 110bhp, is there a particular reason you want to use 1 1/2s?
David (davidDOTsmithAT stonesDOTcom)

I want 111bhp
R Mcknight

in which case you want a weber ;-)
David (davidDOTsmithAT stonesDOTcom)

Void my previous statement. My friends car has the 1 - 1/4 carbs.

Hi David

110 bhp from twin 1 1/4?? Must be a good manifold... since the std manifold doesn't share the carbs...

My vote as you suspect would be for a single 1 3/4.

If you do want to fit 1.5 H4s on a 1275 Frogeye you could contact Tony Davis (tonydavisracing@aol.com;) who has that set up on his Seebring Sprite and I think the bonnet is lower on the Seebring. Peter
