MG Midget and Sprite Technical - u joints

OK- sorry about one more question about my U-Joint repair job. I have the prop out of the car and the old U-Joints out- My 1500 didn't have greese fittings in the original u-joints. The new ones from Moss have greese fitting. I know these have to go in a certain way so not to interfer with the yoke. Can anyone explain how to put them in correctly- thanks for any advise.

Hi!

When I did the UJs on my 1500, the new ones didn't have grease fittings. That said, I'm not sure how the fittings could interfere with the operation of the yokes. I may be wrong, but the biggest issue is simply making sure the yokes go back together the same way they came apart.

By the way, John Twist, of University Motors in Michigan, has an excellent UJ replacement demo video here:

The grease fittings shouldn't interfer with the operation, but if you install them wrong it can be a real hassle trying to get the grease gun on them to lubricate. Try to install the joint so that the grease fitting is on the "open side" when the axle drops, that would be towards the front of the car on the rear joint and towards the rear of the car on the front joint. I also use an old drag racers trick and try to install the grease fitting so that the fitting area is under compression when torque is applied to the drive rather than under pull. The opening and threads are potential weak points and stress cracks could start there. Not much chance of that much torque on a midget, but still doesn't cost a thing to install them that way.

Thanks for the help-- I don't know why but when I looked at the length of the fittings I thought they might interfer with the movement of the yoke. Hopefully I can put it back tomorrow and try it out.

Are you thinking of the correct alignment of the U-Joint yokes?
I believe that the 1500 has a splined driveshaft. If so, the U-Joint yokes must have the correct alignment.
I have attached an image of a MGA driveshaft, but it gives the idea.
A and B must be in the same plane.
