MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Underfelt

Has anyone experimented with alternative materials for sound deadening under car carpets?

The traditional stuff is the compacted felt underlay which works well for cutting down transmitted noise, but has the big drawback of acting like a sponge if it gets wet. The modern alternative carpet underlay is dense foam, but that is just as bad at holding moisture.

Dynamat is good for sticking to panels where noise is mainly caused by panel vibration, but less effective for transmitted noise through the floor.

Has anyone found any modern alternative product that does a good job under carpets? Some sort of closed cell insulating material perhaps?

Doesn't hold water--it's sticky on one side to keep it in place

I found back something I have seen some time ago : one guy tried to improve insonorisation of his Lexus CT200h, using Dynamat Xtreme.

To sum-up, he spent 6hours and 210Eur to cover the engine bay, behind the dashboard and inside doors. His conclusion are non-scientific, but saying that he feels/hear less noise from the back, and he had to change autoradio settings (he heard more bass after, and stronger).

It is in French, but not rocket science and with picture, so might be of some interest... Start at message number 15 : https://hybridlife.org/threads/les-modifications-de-ma-lexus-ct-200h-2011.2959/

I have cut 3/8" waterproof shaped plywood sheets and glued the floor carpet to that - the sheets rest on the steel floor ribs and insulate both noise and heat. It also makes the carpet flat and comfortable.

I don't have any of the traditional style of insulation but the cheapest carpet set know to man and various cut pieces of sound deadening pads on various panels on the car and they are very effective. Plus they don't hold water should I forget to put the hood up and it rains (useful in Cumbria). :)

(sorry Dave I've forgotten how to shorten the link)
