MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Where for art thou oh switch?

73 RWA - newly purchased. Awaiting Haynes etc. I nthe menatime, and at the risk of looking like an utter berk....

Where is the heater fan switch - heater has a fan motor, cannot see the knob to operate it!

Secondly, on the extreme left hand side of the dash, on the left hand side of the speedo, there lurks a push button switch - doesn't seem to do anything, horn perchance? Can't find horn either if that isn't it!

Thirdy - courtesy door lamp and stereo have given up. I tried to disconnect battery earlier and got a massive spark when attempting to diconnect earth! Suspect it may thus have fused something...where. Looked in the small box near hydraulic master cylinders -looks fine ...anywhere else?

Grateful thanks

Mark

Firstly, the fan switch is easy - if it works.
On the dash, below the headlamp switch, there should be a round knob with 'H' on it. If you pull it out, it closes the air intake to the heater. Push it in, it opens the intake. Turn it clockwise when pushed in, it should turn on the fan. If the fan switch doesn't work, they are NLA, so you need to find a used one.

The mystery push switch is a mystery to me, too. Do you mean the righthand side of the dash? The horn should be in the middle of the steering wheel, although it may have moved during the last 39 years.

The horn is also on the same fuse as the interior light, so could be related.

Hi Mark,

You wrote: - Secondly, on the extreme left hand side of the dash, on the left hand side of the speedo, there lurks a push button switch

Switches are usually toggle, rocker or like the heater control switch. Are you sure this is not a manual wind screen wash pump? My 78 has one, it does not stay in as it is pushed out on release each time ready for the next pump stroke.

Many thanks for answers.

Apologies - Mystery push switch/button is on RH side when looking from driver's seat. Located on the extreme RH side of the dash. It is not the washer fluid - that's another push button!

Where is the fuse for horn/courtesy light located please?
M Ogden

The fuse is in the fusebox near the master cylinders.

The one you are looking for is between the brown and purple wires. It might just be a bad connection - there's lots of scope for them.

My horn is jerry rigged with a push switch (rubber covered thing) in that location. Don't know why PO did it yet but I needed to power up electrics to find out.
Its not an immobiliser is it? (I'm gonna get told off for having a thing about immobilizers by someone, I can feel it comin).

Maybe best to sort out fuses and see what happens, PO's do all sorts of things.

Wireing diag in manual. You need to make sure you follow the right one.

Grateful thanks - awaiting manual at present!

I have a feeling that push switch is the horn and yes, I too have a thing about immobilizers - especially when I forget about them!

Mark,
foprget the Haynes for now (plenty of errors in it too) Haynes is for repair driver's Handbook for prevention

the Driver's Handbook would tell you this and more about your car but bear in mind you car may be altered from when it left the factory so photos of your car are are sometimes helpful

(if you want to) you can Customise your post appearance to include your first name and add your car's profile

the heater is very old fashioned and has a three point method of operation - there are threads on this in the Archive which also prove some owners don't know how to fully operate the heater to best effect - all explained in the Driver's Handbook but not in Haynes :)

Our RWAs had the washer on the RH stalk with the wipers - pull back, and the horn on the LH stalk with the indicators - push in. And I think the fan was a rocker switch with a fan icon on it - hate icons!
