MG Midget and Sprite Technical - whining/grinding??
'73 midget Strange whining/grinding noise started. Trying to diagnose is not easy as it wont do it all the time. Seems to be on deceleration, in gear. Can feel it through my feet & hear a grinding noise. Seems to only be in gear, but not certain. Pretty sure not brakes, although it is a "moving" sound, ie, a whirring, not a constand sound. odd any ideas on what to check? Suspecting prop shaft. pretty sure that its not diff as that is fairly new. ![]() |

Could be e.g. exhaust touching as engine shifts to over-run. If propshaft, you'll be getting increasing vibration, esp at speed... A |

I had the same problem on mine, and found it was the backplates rubbing on the disks, after weeks of looking, it took 2 minutes with a hammer and lever to sort that. Also make sure the front number plate is away from the body, as I found the wind caused it to rattle against the grp bonnet and make a similar noise that took ages to identify. Hope it'd nothing worse cheers Neil |

check the tranny oil level....may have lost a rear tranny oil seal prop |

its been suggested to me this could be loose or worn gearbox mounts... whats your feeling on this guys? |

Easy to check, since the diff mounts bolt on the x-member (2 off) and onto the transmission tunnel, under the carpet - 2 per side IIRC. Check also your track-rod ends haev clearance with wheel-rim... A |
