MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Will 175x70x13 fit my SWA WW Midget

Does anyone run 175x70x13 tyres on their square wheel arch midget. I want to fit some to my MkII wire wheel car using centre locks. Any views please?
Thanks.
Neil (K series)

largest size on standard wire wheels is 165 and even these are a squeeze and don't really look right. Are you going to use centrelock Minilites?
David (davidDOTsmithAT stonesDOTcom)

No, 165's are the tightest fit & even then you have to take a grinder to the inner wing lip.
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

I've run 175/70 x 13 on standard 4" wire wheels with tubes to the tyre fitters surprise. The handling was not crisp. I subsequently fitted (NLA) 5.5 x 13 wire wheels with tubes which were extremely difficult to fit and remove from the car. The latest 5.5 x 13 tubeless wire wheels won't fit on SWA with 175/70 tyres.

I wouldn't bother with centrelock wheels - either fit tubeless wire wheels or swap the axle for a bolt on wheel axle etc

Yes but center lock minilites look great dont they , I just wonder about unsprung weight.
R Mcknight

unless you're up the sharp end of a race championship does a few extra pounds of unsprung weight really matter? I reckon not, I love the look too....

David (davidDOTsmithAT stonesDOTcom)

Here is my effort. I too like the knock on alloys, especially the real mccoys

For those who are short sighted the tyre size is 185/60/13 and yes I have rear disks in 13 inch wheels. :-)

The art is to get the wheel exactly central between the spring and the arch. I dont think I could go much wider before I either rubbed the spring or the wheel arch. I have to admit I modified the axle casing and shafts.

Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

I'd expect that if you're looking to get much past 80mph on a country A or B road then the extra unsprung weight will make more of a difference than for a racer at 100 mph plus on a smooth(ish) race track.

The unsprung weight is also a ratio against sprung weight so the lighter the car is the worse the ratio tends to get as it's harder to reduce unsprung weight.

I like that look of those massive center knock ons and the big rubber....a nice aggressive look

Just to clarify, my thoughts are centre lock alloys to fit my exisitng wire wheel axle. My car is a 64 Square Wheel Arch Midget. Size ot tyres are 175x70x13.
Neil (K series)

Yep sorry Neil I did understand and should not have complicated the issue with modified axles. With my original wire wheel axle I could only get about 165s on with the centre lock alloys. However with 175s fitted 1 wheel was fine yet the other rubbed on the arch. Measuring everything up I found the axle was wider at one side than the other (distance between the spring mount and the hub flange) and also at the same side the outer arch was nearer the spring line than the opposite side (Heritage shell). I realised that I could cut off and reweld the spring mounts on the axle but decided to shorten the axle and allow me to fit 185s without problems. If the original had be astetic I am pretty certain that 175s would have fitted. I have in the past eased out the arch on Midget bodyshells and gained about 3/8ths of an inch extra clearence without damaging the paint, simply by placing a sissor jack in the arch at 3 different places and gradually pusing out the outer arch. Not that difficult.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for this. I really really like the look of the centre lock alloys and accept that they are heavier etc but just fancy them. I first need to check these tyres will fit and your advice is very helpful. Thanks,
Neil

Lovely carpet Daniel! ;)

Yes, it was in the garage when I bought the house - it cleans up nicely....

Hi,
I have the offset axle issue on my RWA about 0.5 in.the prop shaft is central in the tunnel, but I need to check the axle ends.I hope to fit 185/60x14 tyres over the Winter along with double bearings and spacers. The car is turboed and needs more rubber on the road.Pic attached (hopefully!) Not sure about the old geezer who got in the way..........
steve cowling

Can't seem to get the pic. to upload.

HUH!!!

And I thought I was the only one with a longer axle on one side. I have a 71 midget...it was only like 1/2 inch off...its on the usa passanger side // UK driverside, At the time I thought it was just my body and rust restroation work that was off the mark

Luckly my wheels had a lot of meat on them so I had the inside of the offending wheel milled off.

Anyone else have this issue...maybe its something in the stamp mould forms when they press out the rear wings.

Vary curious, if not just odd

It's an advanced form of climate control, combined with active sound deadening-you can't hear the scream of s/c gears anymore.

steve cowling

LOL...Now if it can just make a cup of tea, you got it made...then agian by the looks of the bay, Im sure that issue is already solved,,,great enginering work in the bay.
