MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wishbones - A pans

Is anyone currently offering a service to fit new threaded bushes to worn A pans? Or know of a company that does this? I continue to hear that the new ones supplied by Moss etc are of pretty awful quality, rebushed originals would seem to be a better solution.
David Smith

I think Peter May has them and I would be pretty sure about the quality
aj robinson

Yes Peter has them and I do buy parts from them so have confidence in their quality. Just that at £110 each I was considering the options for a cheaper solution. I've seen that Moss sell the BMH ones at £150+ and they also list an 'alternative' at £102. I wonder who makes the alternative, and are these the ones PMay sells? What we poor OAPs and skinflints need is another Alan Anstead who can rebush old units.
David Smith

I expect you would need to be a member or know one but the A30 owners club list wishbones and replacement bushes for them https://www.austina30a35ownersclub.co.uk/ClubSpares.aspx?SparesCatID=7 .
David Billington

Try PBL at B’Ham. I believe he will recon your wishbones.
Alan Anstead

Code, Alan? What's PBL
I thought it was the first Mk1 demonstration car?
GuyW

I appreciate money is finite for most people, but £110 for a good quality wishbone sounds like a sensible price to me.

Its not a job you want to do again because of a duff cheap part.

I think Alan means PBW (Paul Wilkins)

Now seems to be trading under the old Spridgebits name.

That’s good news that you can get the threaded bushes to braze in. I’ve got the Barry King wishbones on one car and standard on the other. I wonder if you bought two of the open bushes whether you could make standard wishbones into the BK style with two grease nipples?

The fulcrum pin is a smaller diameter at the ‘closed’ end.

I fitted all my wishbones with grease nipples at both ends. It ensures that when greasing, you don't force contaminated grease into the smaller end bush.
GuyW

Mine also have nipples at both ends. Bought from Frogeye Spares a few years back - UK made and quite pricey but excellent quality, complete with fulcrum pins. Looking now though they're over £100 each!

I feel sure we discussed this last year too.

"First set completed and installed on the wishbone the bushes are press fit and installed with a smear of polyurethane adhesive, there are two sizes of bush the two smaller top hat bushes form the minor endfloat control surfaces and the larger bushes form the major end float control surfaces,
Due to the self lubricating properties of Nylatron GS, the en24 pin is installed with a light lubricating oil,
End float control
The theory behind this method of end float control takes into account the purpose of the original threaded pin, when the brakes are applied the kingpin will want to move rearward, the king pin lower face acts as a thrust surface against the nylatron,
To prevent all the force from acting on just
The rearward bushes of the wishbone the thrust washer at the forward end of the pin pushes against the thrust surface of the forward top hat bush to prevent the forward and rear bushes from splaying apart, these are retained by circlips,
The trunnion pin is retained to the kingpin via the original taper pin.
As for surface hardness, due to the working surfaces of the bushes being made from the molybdenum impregnated nylon the need for surface hardening on the trunnion is no longer present as the sacrificial working surface is softer than the pin itself"

He's testing it.

I'm sure we discussed this, and another on this bbs last year.

A new project I am working on - uprated lower wishbones.
Working from a 3D scan of the front suspension I am designing a component that is stronger and more durable, has provision for camber adjustment and most importantly does away with the threaded fulcrum pins. Compatibility with stock kingpins and spring pans mean it should be a bolt-on replacement for the original design.
I am trying to gauge interest and see whether it is going to be worth investing in production tooling, or just making a pair for myself. No idea on pricing or timings yet and obviously I won't be selling anything without serious testing and validation works.

Thanks all, this brings together a lot of useful info, some of which I'd completely missed previously. So 3 possible routes:
- join A35 club, buy bushes and 'I know a man who will braze them in for me'
- contact Paul at PBW re his reconditioning cost
- contact Stan to find out how testing is going with his innovative redesign.
David Smith

Anamnesis, I dont have Facebook so cant see what James is up to.
Any photo's you can duplicate here?

Only his bare bones design shown here Arie. He hasn't updated anything since. I asked a while ago, but he didn't reply.

JL Heap said his full setup would be in retail by now, but nothing on his website that I can see.
