MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Xenon HID kit

Hi,

has anyone tried these on ebay?
Are they any good, seem too cheap to be true!

No comment on the HIDs but you can just post the item number 190278182562 rather than a long wrapped link.

And tinyurl is very easy

google tinyurl and you will get the link to it

bookmark the opening page

and follow the very easy instructions on the page, for free too!

And now they have added the ability to specify the last bit so it can actually sound like the destination like http://www.tinyurl.com/SCuM50

Well you learn something new everyday - I know how to tiny url, excekkent, thanks guys, but has anyone used these HID kits as the halogens are ok but could be better?

I'm also interested in HID for the pathetic lights on my jag.....which means if anyone wants the genuine (but pathetic) late 60's early 70's P700 tripods they may be up for grabs!

this listing seems a little dodgy though, since he isn't actually telling you 'what is in the box', and I know that the prices are different depending on the bulb you want....also is that price for one bulb and ballast or a pair?

I would be dis-inclined to buy simply on price...and he seems to have a history of selling iffy kit if the feedback is to be believed.

If you do get some let us all know how they are.

The negative feed back seems to be about golf clubs, HID feedback seems to be OK.
Graham.
Graham P 1330 Frogeye

Graham, you are correct. I'm sorry I did not wish to imply that this fellow's negs relate to the HID lights he appears to sell.

My comment about 'iffy kit' related to his reported passing off of fake golf clubs as genuine and copied DVD's as originals. Obviously, it would up to the court to determine if his reported actions were indeed criminal, and my comment that his feedback history implied he was anything other than completely above board and honest was based on here say and extrapolation.

(just in case he is reading this ;)

HID seems an obvious and effective upgrade over conventional H4 Halogens due to the lower load on the wiring etc....I too wonder if there are any snags...

My concern would how do you keep them COOL, and water proof at 8,000-12,000 kelvins thats pretty freaken HOT, id think plastic would melt, and if you bored out an old glass bulb is would just heat up and the moment rain hit it BOOM!!!...Im guessing you would need some kind of special bowl/lens for the HID to fit into...most likely it would have to be focased as well,(Maginfied lens) you might be ahead by going to the salvage yard, and finding a "HID" light assembly in a 7.25 round light on another car.

granted I dont know anything about HID....Just my observation from the ebay page....my guess the lens bowls that the HID buld goes into is a special kind of lexon

luck...let us know how it works

Unfortunately, you would have MOT problems with these. The bulb focus is not necessarily in the same place as the standard bulb might be, giving goodness knows what kind of beam pattern. They are designed for use with projector headlamps > I was able to fit them in my 7 year old modern OK and get an MOT.
You could of course fit them in spotlamps!
na munn

Prop....you're confusing temperature with energy.

The filament in normal bulb glows white hot with not problems at all since luckily it dissipates only a few watts of energy with which to warm up stuff.

so rather than "BOOM" it'd be a very short and barely audible 'sh-fut'.

What's wrong with 160W Halogens?

and have you seen how much he wants for the postage!!

Here's an interesting HID retro fit in a mini:

He blends a projector light with the original housing. Looks like it could be a fun project :)

100/80 W halogens and 55W Cibie spots does it for me :-)

(they do drop the idle speed by a few hundred rpm when all turned on though )

far far better lights than on any of my modern stuff. Only frustration is that I originally had cibie tango long distance spots. when they were damaged recently it seems only the standard drive or fog is now available. bloooooming expensive aswell.

According to a book I have on vehicle electrics you must have self levelling headlamps if you use high discharge lights on dip beam. this is because they are so bright it may well cause dazzle. I could fit the lights but not yet worked out how to make them self levelling with a midget suspension.
just go to a decent set of Halogen lights such as Wipac or Cibie.

Thanks for all the comments. I was concerned about the whole shi-bang, hence the post. At £80 it's a big risk - although there cheaper ones on the site.
Was just wondering if anyone had had any experience of these in a 7.5" headlamp bowl. I'll stick with the old Prince of Darkness halogens for the time being.
Not my highest priority at present so will resist the temptation, wait a while and see what happens.
Still I know how to tinyurl now!

Finally! Those Blubber Bumpers have come in handy! Mounted to the bottom side of the aforementioned frontal blubber:

Picture of such installed below. Notice how much brighter they are than the factory lamps.

A bit easier on the wallet as well.

Interesting article on these HID upgrades. This chap seriously doesn't like them!
have to say there are too many vague pictures on that listing for me to trust!

Got 130W/80W lamps on the Lenham Midget plus 55W spots. IFD! (Instant Forwards Daylight)
2x130 + 2x80 + 2x55 = 530Watts of light on 'flash'.

Still not as good as my Merc SL500 lights.

I also gained a bit by making better wiring looms for less voltage drop. Here is a loom added to my MGC (for sale for £2500) and you can see the thickness of the added loom plus the method of fitting and protecting it. Big fusebox and relay stack by the alternator that feeds the lamps separately.

Guess thats where half these sorts of kits are made then - they don't want to harm sales! ;o)

Thanks Craig,

you've just saved me a few quid!

As has already been mentioned on here the problem is with the legality.

Self levelling and washer jets are required as with factory fitted Xenons.

However, for some reason there seems to be little enforcement on these as proved by the number of idiots driving around with these type of bulbs fitted and blinding me.

Does it matter what lights you have when your backside is three inches or less off the ground and you are confronted with an oncoming Armoured Personnel Carrier AKA SUV with their badly adjusted headlights and blazing foglights (irrespective of the weather). Just pull into the side of the road until your night vision is restored.

Dave
Penwithian

Cheers Craig,

the Auto Express article makes informative viewing and puts the lid on it as far as I'm concerned. It also explais why there are quite a few very bright and/or badly aligned headlights out there.
Experienced the SUV situation Dave, all too often this winter, it's almost as bad when they're right behind you and the cabin is full of HID light!
