MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Zenith Stromberg - auto choke rebuild

79 midget. I am rebuilding an auto choke for a ZS carb. This it the third time I have rebuilt the carb and each time the rebuild kits do not contain the 2 o-rings for the brass choke barrel which is pressed into the choke housing. In the two prior rebuilds, I just reintalled the old o-rings. This is not an option on this rebuild. Does anyone know how I can find new o-rings for this choke barrel?

Thanks, Andrew

Hiya, Andrew.

My suggestion would be to take the choke barrel to your local hardware store and browse through their O-ring selection until you find a pair that fit.

I've rebuilt my choke as well, and I know what you're dealing with. I found an O-ring for the bottom of the damper assembly, the one that goes around the adjuster screw, at a hardware store.

While I'm thinking about it, do you have that little bitty O-ring that goes around the choke needle?

By the way, I was going to link you to Rik Jaskowiak's choke rebuild pages, but it appears that after all these years, the page is gone. Sigh... He did an excellent job of documenting the rebuild with pics and very clear text.

On the off chance the site comes back up:

I printed out that page years ago, and inserted it in my shop manual. Great stuff!

Thanks Gryf. I am going to NAPA tomorrow to look for the o-rings. The rebuild kit has the o-ring for the choke needle, you would think they would include the choke barrel o-rings too.

I think I met you years ago at MG Club of St Louis car show. You have been posting to this BBS a long time.

Since about 1996, as I recall. And yes, if you were at the St Louis All British Car Day, we most likely met! I've been there every year since '95.

Good luck finding the O-rings! You may want to take along both the choke barrel and the choke body, to make sure that you can fit the barrel back in with the new O-rings fitted. When I put a new O-ring in my Zenith's main needle adjuster, I had to be pretty finicky about the size of the ring. For example, I found one that fit in the groove quite nicely, but pretty much prevented the screw from fitting back into the damper rod. So if you can, do a test-fit there at NAPA.
