I've just finished my university course and will shortly be picking up a job starting at £15 / £16K (I hope!)

When that happens, and I've finished my driving lessons, I'm off to the nearest dealer to place my order for a Trophy Yellow ZR+ 105.

Now that's worth the job hunting!! Hope the financing is good, although I spoke to a dealer today who said they would be able to accomodate someone on my budget.

On the ZS range only the 180 (Core) model gets the large rear spoiler and then only when it is in 4 door form. The 120 and the 180 5 door get a less obvious appendage, not dissimilar to other existing spoilers seen on some recent 45's.

In terms of wheels the standard for the 120 range is Hairpins in 16" with a 205/50 tyre. Hairpins have a 6.5" width and are currently used on the rare 25GTi, but with the new tyre size not the 205/45 of the GTi.

On the 180 17" 'Straights' with a width of 7" are used with 205/45/x17 tyres. These are a 195ukp option on other models.

I will be having a ZS180 after 1st September, but at the moment I am seeing where I can get the best deal. Clearly the 7% discount that relates to 'employees' and those others who are accepted as eligable from this offers a worthwile saving.

My choice of the ZS180 saloon revolves around the press launch driving expereinces. I went there with the clear thought that I would replace the Rover 218iS wife has with a ZR160, a logical step. However the transformation of the 45 into MGZS is tremendous, and as such clearly became the pick of the bunch for me.

On a separate note which hasn't been mentioned anywhere, but is relevant. There is as you all know a choice of 4 saloon or 5 door hatch in the ZS range. There is a very usefull additional degree of body rigidity that applies to the saloon which is reflected in the way the car performs. Take note that 5 door versions may not have quite the same edge and poise the 4 door has. Note which one is used in the BTCC!!! Incidentlayy this is nothing new as it has been a common point of knowledge from the time when the two body styles first appeared.

Just driven the ZS 180 - brilliant - in full "yellow and mean, custard machine" yellow. All I've gotta do now is convince 'er indoors.
Paul Hunt

John, I got a 220is for about 13K with £500 down on the Rover Select - that cost about £250 per month. I was on a £ 11k job at the time, albeit at home.

Just to give you an idea - basically save as much as you can to put as big a deposit down as you can.

Very true, "others who are accepted as eligable" is interesting, what do you have to do to be eligable? ;)

Ref. that 7% new car discount. Surely applicable ONLY to non-part exchange deals - anyone know otherwise.

Which colour Rog? Trophy Blue I'd bet? Saw the ZS180 in the Blackpool MG Rover dealer in the yellow and it looked stunning! I presume you will go for the booted 4 door version for the better rigidity?

(I want one too.....)

Eligibility now includes the employe their spouse children grandparents aunts uncles nephews nieces cousins really any family member but you need employee's signature on purchase form.
7% off MGZR,MGZS,MGZT to above until September 30.
Joe

Phil, got to test drive them all at the weekend at Faradays in Newbury, all of them superb.

I have ordered a ZT 160+ in Trophy Yellow, should be delivered at the begining of September. No discount but as i have got cars from him before he is throwing in some extras for free.

Superb car, certainly nothing like the normal 75.
Carl

I part-ex'd my W reg MGF VVC and still got the 7% discount... I didnt mention that i was p/xing until we had agreed the price for the new car (hehehehe)

My uncle didn't have to sign the form, I did...

Phil

So all we need is an autograph of a Rover employee eh? Hmm... ;o)
Rob Bell

There are some unclear areas of the 7% 'employee scheme'. Clearly employees and retired employees are eligable in their own right. However the scheme has been extended to employees of various suppliers. Additionally immediate family members of elligable parties and a single further nominated 'friend', so I have been told. There seems to be some variation between dealers on the scope of eligability, hence the need for some clarification.

My order is placed for A Trophy Blue ZS180 - delivery mid September. I did note that the scheduled delivery dates were starting to slip back quite quickly due to the number of orders being taken.

Nice selection Roger and good luck. I hope that the reason you may have to wait a little longer for delivery is due simply to the large number of orders being placed. I remember back in 1982 when I placed an order for a new MG Metro and one for a friend, there was a shortage simply because dealers who should know better, vastly underestimated the demand for these little cars and under ordered. One sales manager I knew then called them "tarted up Metros". Some truth in that but, THE PUNTERS LIKED THEM! ... and bought them like hot cakes!

John McFeely.
John McFeely

Yes John there is a minor connection to the launch of the MG Metro. I seem to recall that Austin Rover had planned for a take up rate of about 5% of the Metro range being MGs. The initial rate was running at close to 30% which caused serious problems in respect of parts supply of all the different MG parts.

Today I understand that with a 50,000 annula production rate for all three models and all variants within those three models the same sitaution regarding specific parts supply is present. This meaning that since the MG parts lists are so different from the equivalent Rover models that delivery dates will slip quickly as orders are placed. I nailed my flag to the mast in order than when I did make a decision to go I wouldn't be stuck with a 2 or 3 month waiting time. I haven't spoken to the dealer recently to see how far the delivery dates have now slipped back.

Rog
Roger Parker

Rog- exactly the car I had in mind!!! A Trophy blue ZS180 sounds just the ticket :o)
Rob Bell

> I haven't spoken to the dealer recently to see how far the delivery dates have now slipped back.

I placed my order for an Anthracite ZS180 yesterday and, by accepting a car without rear head-restraints, I will be picking it up on the 3rd of next month. Built to order would have been the 16th or the 23rd in Trophy Blue, so it appears that the waiting list is too bad yet...

Cheers,

Steve.

It seems that Z cars are selling well. Good news, encouraging for MGR !
I hope they will promote well the Z cars in Germany, home of Brabus, AMG, Alpina, Carlsson, ... The ZT should please the Germans.

And that 'employees discount scheme' sounds very strange, but amusing ;))
Fabrice

>>'employees discount scheme' sounds very strange, but amusing

Fabrice, a friend of mine in Birmingham would get a new car every year and sell it for about what he had paid under the scheme a year later - zero depreciation.
Ddraig

Ddraid,
*would* he or *does* he ?
because a sale is only done when you've got the money ...
What about a new F every year in april/may ? ;)) should sell

the point that I find strange : it's not only the MGR employee that has an advantage (and thus a perquisite, if my dictionnary is correct !), but anybody from his/her (vague) family !
Aren't perquisites taxable ? ;))
Fabrice

Ordered our trophy blue ZR 120+ today.

Delivery quoted 23rd Sept but to be confirmed on Tuesday.

Advised that delivery date of 23rd was as of middle of last week. This may slip if MGR have a busy weekend.

Now the waiting starts.
Pete

Most impressed with the ZS180 I test drove today but am interested a 5 door 120+.
Will probably order a Trophy blue one tomorrow.

I'd like the steering wheel/gearstick knob upgrade but guess that will put back the delivery date.
My only wish is that it had an external temperature sensor!

Employees discount is available to a LARGE amount of family eg spouse of grandchildren of retired workers!
Trade in is ok.
Brett Laniosh

A friend has had a ZS180 for nearly a couple of weeks now and his initial thoughts were very positive. My own car is a couple of weeks early and is at the dealer being prepped for Sat PM collection.

Rog
Roger Parker

It seems to me that the ZS180 saloons are being quoted as September 1st delivery and other models are later dates. I don't know how MGR are building them, but I assume it's in batches according to model type.

My 5dr ZS180 delivery date is for 23rd September, and it appears that all other ZS models apart from the 180 saloon are being delivered later in the month.
Richard

Ordered a 120+. Delivery 30 September.
Brett

I had heard of a slight hiccup in some parts supplies to Longbridge which may have affected just the ZS120 models (Perhaps the different trim) There is clearly a build bias to the 180 witness my car being something over a couple of weeks early. There may also be a deliberate bias to get the Core models on the road to provide a greater visual impact.

Rog
Roger Parker

My source informs me that there is a hold up at the factory due to seating and furnishings.

I would have thought that this isn't go to hold up production of the main car, if they can get this sorted early enough they should be easy to fit and result in no delays.
Brett

Figures then. The dealer facility to follow the build of cars at the factory shows a large number of cars built and off the line, but not accepted by sales. This indicates the 'completed' cars are short of a part or two before actually finished.
