MG MGA - 3rd to 4th crunch
I've got a new one for you all to think about. While driving my mk2 aggressively I've noticed that when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear a slight crunch of the gears occurs during the transition. I'm no gearbox expert, but I would think that if the syncro's work while down shifting they should certainly work while upshifting too. A couple of notes - my foot is off the throttle when shifting, and I'm using Castrol 30wt in the 'box. Ideas? Thanks!

John, You should be using Castrol 20w50--Time proven results for our gearboxes. I've never, even on a fresh gearbox, been able to speed shift like an American car. There's always an ever so slight pause in neutral. jm2c Paul

I got it. It's a riddle. No one ever shifts down into 4th. Or did you mean to say when shifting from 2nd to 3rd you feel a slight crunch going into 3rd? However when shifting from 4th down into 3rd you feel no crunch? Ray

There's probably a bit of slop in the gbx, and with things generally old and worn, it has a right to grumble a bit when harshly treated. If rebuilt with all nice new Syncros and bearings, it will become much less fussy, but also a bit harder to change gear because everything will be so tight and crisp.

John, The syncro ring used for 3rd to 4th is not the same syncro ring as when shifting from 4th to 3rd. Therefore, you could expect diffferent wear, depending on the driving habits of the people involved over the past decades.
