MG MGA - AIR INTAKE BOX

I wish to design and fit an air intake box to the carbs of my '57 Coupe in lieu of the current pancake filters. I also intend the box to be fed by the present air hose. I shall appreciate any advice this group may have to offer as regards this modification, particularly recommendations with regard to suitable air filter and box dimensions.

Joe,

Several weeks ago on eBay There was an old, very nicely made, aluminum air box that fit in lieu of the pancake air filters. According to the description it was used for a MGA SCCA racer in the 50's. It appeared as though the one common air intake port faced forward and I would guess in close proximity but not attached to the back of the fresh air intake bracket that the hose attaches to. It the branched to the carbs. I would believe you would want to design it so the fresh air is dumped into the box area and contained for a while near the carburettor mouths perhaps using velocity stacks, but not using it as a closed box that would force feed the carbs and securely attached to the freash air hose feed. Although its been a few years, the air boxes on the superbikes I owned worked as a source for fresh cold air at atmosphere supplied by naca ducts and hoses from the fairing and were not a tight pressurized sealed box, force feeding the carbs. If pressurized I would think it would be a nightmare and most likely impossible to find the correct needle/jet combination as well as screw up the presure differences needed inside the SU's for correct operation, unless you were running in a narrow RPM range. I'm amazed by the number of MGA's that don't include the fresh air hose to the carbs hose bracket.

Are there any 70,71,72 volvos in wrecking yards out your way? They used a similar plastic box air cleaner system that you seam to be describing. Look for the 140 models.
