MG MGA - Andrex Dampers (shock absorbers)

Does anybody have Andrex dampers (shock absorbers) fitted to their MGA?
They were factory fitted to some MGA's during production.
They are a friction type damper, not a hydraulic type.

Hi Mick - I think they went out of business and started making toilet rolls instead LOL .

I think i have read that you can not use an anti-sway bar in the front with this type of damper. Any one care to elaborate?

Hi Mitch,

As you are a mga twin cam owner you will find the statement in your factory Workshop Manual at Section K12. It is also mentioned in the BMC Confidential Service Memorandum MG/278 for the Twin Cam.
Andrex dampers could be fitted at the factory for both the pushrod and Twin Cam MGA.
That statement of incompatibility of the Andrex damper and the anti-sway bar also appears in the factory Workshop Manual for the pushrod car in Section KKK4.
Only 8 Twin Cams had Andrex dampers and the only owner that we can trace who had them says that he had to remove them because they took up some of the same space as the anti-sway bar.

Jean,

Your link does not work.
Can you give the basic URL and then the search sequence that locates the file.

The Andrex dampers were fitted at the MG factory Competitions Department to a few cars. I have read that some Le Mans factory entrants used them, but I cannot confirm it. Can anybody confirm it? Maybe the MGA homologation papers for Le Mans may show it.
The advantage of the Andrex damper seems to be for slow wheel oscillation rates. The hydraulic type do not work well at low movement rates, but are much superior at high movement rates.

I have found a cutaway drawing of the factory prepared Le Mans car that shows the Andrex damper fitted.

They were also fitted to TD MKII cars. One of the distinguishing features. Ask around at the TD sites.

Here is a picture of the Le mans car (EX 182) shock absorber that is mentioned in the Mille Miglia Thread. I took it at Bob West's garage during the car's restoration.
