MG MGA - another front end question

Hi,
I stripped off the front end yesterday and also the rear. Having read a lot of threads, and having the engine already removed, I was concerned about the spring.
I tried a rope/chain trolley jack method, and when I would try and compress the spring, the top trunnion bolt would only get harder to slide. I then removed the chain, and just slid the bolt out. There was no pressure being exerted by the spring. Had the sme on the othe rside of the car. I measured the spring and it is 9" long. Are my springs bad?

Jonathan,
Free height for cars up to no. 15151 is 9.28" and the free height for all others is 8.88" both within 1/16". What is the condition of the rubber rebound buffers? Have a good day!

John,
The rubber bumbers were severely damaged.
So actually they were slightly less than 9", so they sound right.
What will the condition of the bumpers indicate?
