MG MGA - Bore size
What is the maximum bore size that is sensible for a 1600 block. Does anyone have any experience of building a 'big bore' 3 bearing engine. Any advice on con rods, cranks etc will be very helpful |

Geoff, The time and money you will spend will still not get you up to what a stock 1800 can deliver. 3 bearing motors get more and more crank flex as you increase there power which wears out the bearings faster. I got an 18v engine for £175 in UK a couple of months ago. But it cost me that much again for the adapter back plate. If it's more power your chasing, I've always found the SU's and exhaust manifold are the limiting factor, not the bore size. Also the more you bore the engine, the thinner the linings become and the more overheating problems you have. If you want 1800+ cc and an MGA looking block then sleaving each cylinder is the only way. Hope this helps. <MARK> |
