MG MGA - Brake pipes routing diagram
Can anyone direct me to a good, clear diagram showing the routing of brake pipes on the Twin Cam, particularly those on the rear axle which link the disc brakes from a three-way union on the axle. I have just been alarmed to find a badly kinked/crushed pipe which connects the right hand side (UK driver’s side that is) disc brake from the three-way union, about 18” long, as it passes by the shock absorber drop arm. Weird that something seems to have hit it at that position some time even though it’s located above the rear axle. A good diagram would really help to make a decent replacement routing.

Bruce, not a Twin Cam owner here, but the routing of the brake line on your car looks very wrong. I've attached a picture of the axle from a late 1600 as well as a drawing from the SPL for a Twin Cam. The picture shows the routing well above the axle U-bolts and bracket and if you look closely on the Twin Cam pdf drawing, you can see line #13 coming up and over u-bolt bracket and then do a ninety to the right along the rear of the axle. Hopefully someone else will chime in to confirm.

Thanks Nick. Agree that. Something very weird has happened there! Surprised I’ve still got brakes! So much for the annual MOT. I’ve ordered a new CuNi pipe, male-male, 3/8” UNF, 18” long guided by the Guru’s piping data and will bring it vertically more and then along the axle as you suggest. Would still welcome maybe a body-off chassis picture from anyone restoring a Twin Cam which shows the rear axle brake pipes. |

Bruce Don't know if this is correct or not but it's how it is on this car '59 model full resto. (off the net) ![]() ![]() |

Interesting one William. Can’t see the normal three-way union to supply the other side brake, but useful to see thanks. It confirms the “up and over” pipe routing at least. |

Bruce-- I think the 3way fitting is there attached to the tag on the housing with the rh pipe fitted as well as the flex hose but the lh pipe hadn't been fitted yet inthat overhead pic. I went to find the pics again to recheck but couldn't find them but this car has it the same--pic no.97 so I guess that's how they go - ? Bruce, Looking at the first of the photos Willy posted, zoom in and you can just see the 3-way. My 3-way is 180 degrees rotated compared to the photo, thus bringing the horizontal pipe runs closer to the axle. My route then follows as per the photo. I tried to get a photo whilst my car was out this morning, but it really needs the wheel off to show. Regards Colin |

Bruce. These photos might help: the first is the Offside, showing the pipe coming from the 3-way, up over the axle and then into the bottom of the cylinder. The second is the Nearside, having traversed horizontally, along the axle from the 3-way, then curving up over the axle, then into the bottom of the cylinder. I recall there is a metal support /band around the axle on the horizontal run. Regards Colin ![]() ![]() |

Great stuff Colin. Very helpful. Hope all’s well with you over there. |
