MG MGA - Brake seal

Hi, I'm working on rebuilding by front brake calipers, and currently have them split. Does anyone know where I can get the seal that goes between the calipers? (I've checked both Moss and VB, and neither seem to have them listed)

As well, I'd like to put in new bolts when I reassemble them. Can I use any graded bolt? (or do I need some sort of stretch bolts)

Thanks, Jason
Jason

Hi Jason. I just checked the Moss Motors website, and thefluid channel O-ring is listed and should be available. It is Moss part number 180-285. the seals are $1.50 each US. Little British Car Company should have them also. Cheers! Glenn

Hi again Jason. I re used my old bolts (the larger ones) when I rebuilt my calipers in 1980. The calipers worked flawlessly, and still do. Some people say the bolts should be replaced, but if the threads are in good condition, and screw into the casting easily without binding, you can probably get away with re using them. I would clean the casting threads with a tap, since the threads get pretty rusty. The smaller bolts on my calipers were badly deteriorated, so I replaced them with grade 5 bolts. Hope this helps, Glenn

Jason, the seals are available through Scarborough Faire 401.724.4200 or 888.MGPARTS

There shouldn't be any reason not to reuse the old seals, unless they've been lost. I too reused the old caliper bolts but I would think you'd want to use grade 8 bolts if you were replacing them.

Hi Mark. I have to disagree with you about re using the old fluid channel seals inside the calipers. The old seals get crushed considerably when the caliper halves are bolted together. Used seals are already crushed and sit flush with the caliper machined surface, and in all liklihood will not seal properly a second time. A caliper seal failure means no brakes, and I would personally not be willling to chance an automobile accident for $3.00 worth of new hydraulic seals. Glenn
