MG MGA - Does this make anyone pant?

John,
Which part are you asking about?

Running the heater might make you pant--or something!
Jim Ferguson

Beautiful engine, but all that intake hardware certainly makes the three exhaust tubes look small and lonely over on their side. Still not panting though, at my age that would take climbing the stairs or at least getting out of my chair.;-)

Sorry - I think it looks awful.
Presumably petrol can drip off the carbies(?) onto the distributor - shouldn't last too long.
There's no breather from the rocker box to air intake. Looks like the lovely rocker box has been wrecked fitting the heater pipe, which looks like an MGB part.
Looks like you can forget a nice cool air flow through the heater in the summer, with zero ram effect and nice oily fumes from the engine bay too!
It's probably an MGB engine painted grey anyway...
Gone on go and look at a proper one - that's how it should be! I just don't reckon "A's" need to go any faster, with their lack of any current safety features.

John,
I'm not panting but it is an interseting setup. Do you know what kind of fuel injection that is? I don't think I've ever seen one like it.

Pete,
It looks like the fuel lines and injectors are far enough out from the block to prevent leaks onto the distributor. I don't see where the rocker box has been damaged. You're right about engine fumes.

I assume the heater pipe has been fixed to the rocker box - yuk!

Looks like the pipe to the heater is clamped in place with two clamps mounted to the rocker box retaining studs. Not pretty, but keeps it short and away from the heat of the exhaust. I would suspect that the engine crankcase breather is attached to the tappet cover on the side of the block. There is a hose comming up from the lower side between the 3rd and 4th intake runners that could well be the vent line. Certainly not original, but looks to be well done and engineered for someone wanting more performance from their car. Plenty of us have made mods of one type or another in that pursuit. As for the heater, I agree that the open vent is not a good idea. Converting to a twin cam box would solve the problem and allow normal heater function.
Bill Young

Pete,
As Bill Y says it looks like the heater pipe is clamped to the rocker box studs as on the MGB.

Wow! Pete, obviously a purist, you humor me! At least it's still a B-Series and not a Miata engine!

Bills, I like the execution too. I wonder if there are any mods to the fuel pump to keep the proper pressure on the FI.

Heater issue - Noted.

Carbs over dizzy - over dizzy or red hot header. Which is worse?

Cheers!

Hi John

Sparks are best for a quick fire! Ever looked at a dodgey coil in the dark?

I'd be almost certain that the fuel pump was replaced. Most electronic fuel injections systems require at least 40psi of fuel pressure to perform correctly. There are a couple of Bosch pumps used in VW's and BMW's that mount outside the tank and produce such pressures, great for F.I. conversions. You also need a return line to the tank or swirl pot for unused fuel from the pressure regulator. Unless there is a system failure there should never be any drips of fuel from the system onto the dizzy, since there isn't any fuel sitting unused in float bowls when the engine isn't running and the electronics keep the injectors closed until the signal for fuel is received.
Bill Young

I'd like to know what the overall cost of this conversion was, and how it compares to a supercharger setup in terms of cost, performance, and driveability. Not that I'm knocking it- I give the guy kudos for deciding he wants a fuel injected A and then going out and doing it.
Mark

It's right hand drive. Trying to make out the detail on the master cylinder. Looks like it has cooling vanes on the extended tank or are my eyes deceiving me?

Steve
Steve Gyles

Steve, looks like a standard top for a MKII master cylinder to me.
Bill Young

Steve - your eyes deceive you - looks a regular 1600 master extension to me.

Having carbs over distributors is no problem - I have run for years with Webers hung over my distributor on an HRG headed TVR. Haven't burned up once!

That injection sure looks to be on the bulky side - I'd do it with Weber style throttle bodies - bit more compact.
