MG MGA - Engine Mountings

I have spent the day taking the uprated 18V engine and o/d gearbox out of my racing B with a view to installing both in my [soon to be] racing A.

I knew that the engine mountings were different and I anticipated taking the rectangular mounting brackets off a spare 1622 block and fitting these in place of the round mounts on the 18V engine. Having tried to do this on one side I have discovered that the fixing holes in the front engine plates are different although the tapped mounting hole in the block appears to be the same. It now looks as though I will have to change the front engine plate as well as the bracket, but this engine has been going so well I hesitate to start puuling it apart and I am hoping someone out there knows of an alternative approach.

Any suggestions?

Maurice.

Hi Maurice. I once put a Dodge car engine into a dodge pickup truck. The engine, and engine mounts were quite different. I ended up using some engine mount parts from the car engine, and engine mount components from the truck engine, to fabricate a set of "hybrid" motor mounts that essentially adapted the car engine to the truck frame. Perhaps you can also fabricate a similar motor mount from both sets of motor mounts? Just a suggestion. Cheers! Glenn

Maurice,

Take the rectangular mounting brackets from a 1974 or earlier 5-main engine. Then use the rectangular MGB rubber motor mounts.

I ran into the same problem. I bit the bullet and swapped the front plate. When you get down to it, it is not a major job. Took me an hour or so.

Thanks once again for the helpful comments. I looked at the possibility of cobbling together parts of each type of mounting bracket, but, being an arty f**ty architectural type and not a down to earth engineer, I couldn't figure that one out.

I then sat down with the catalogues following up on Mark's comments, but it appears that there are only two types, each of which need their own engine front plate, so I spent a couple of hours this morning stripping the front plate from a 1500 block a getting my 1950 block ready for the swap. Being a Sunday, I have no access to new gaskets, so I will complete the job early next week.

As you say Steve, it's not to bad a job once you get down to it.

Regards,

Maurice.
