MG MGA - Exhaust replacement
Hi, I want to replace the silencer on my 1600 MK I as there is a hole in it. I’m looking for a SS one, but noticed that there are exhausts in one piece, starting from the manifold to the end, and exhausts in two pieces (pipe and a silencer), and even in three (two pipe parts and a silencer). The one on my car right now is a one piece. Is there any benefit from one system or another ? Would it be worthwhile going for a sport exhaust (including new manifold), taken into consideration that the engine is original, with no changes to increase the power ? I was also thinking of using some exhaust wrap in order to get the heat in the engine compartment down. I have a vapor lock problem on long drives when coming into stop and go traffic. The carb. Vent tube is in place, and the felt on the bonnet as well, and there are no engine overheating problems. Any advise ? Thanks, Koen |

Koen- If the hole is in the endplate of the silencer ("muffler" to us Yanks), you might use it to your advantage to re-pack some of the glass fibre that has likely deteriorated over the years. Barney Gaylord has a full "how-to" section on his Website: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/ex103.htm Regarding the vapor lock, Barney's site also shows a home-made heat shield that fits below the intake manifold, here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/cb202.htm Best of luck. |

Hi Koen. exhaust pipes are generally fabricated in multiple pieces ONLY to reduce shipping costs. I think a multiple piece exhaust pipe simply increases the possibility of an exhaust leak. I dont think a performance exhaust system will give you much of a performance increase if your engine is unmodified. As for vapour lock, if your heat shield is rusted, it will ABSORB engine heat, and cause the carbs to vapour lock! I had a serious vapour locck problem until I fabricated a new heat shield out of stainless steel. It is identical to the stock piece, and I re used the asbesdos from the old shield. Vapour lock is now completely cured, thanks to the new heat shield. Hope this helps. Cheers! Glenn |
