MG MGA - Fram CA77 air filter problem???
My rebuilt 1800 3 main was giving me problems that felt like fuel starvation on hard acceleration. In addition to that my oil consumtion was high and I was putting out a lot of blue smoke at idle. First thought was rings or valve guides. Compression test showed 175 on all cylinders. Checked ignition, timing and fuel pressure and all was fine. Removed air filters to find a large puddle of oil in the front filter. Removed both filters and car runs and accelerates like a race car and the smoking has gone way. Current theory is that the air filter although fairly new was too dense for the engine causing it to pull oil through the vent tube. Which caused the poor preformance and smoking. Next step is to buy K&N's which should flow better. Kris |

Should have added that I am running my carbs and filters from my 1500 with #6 neeedles. |

Hi Kris, I've used the Fram ones and similar NAPA ones for the past two year without a problem. Did you cut a hole in the filter vinyl to allow the breather hose to vent ?? Mike |

Mike I did have to notch the filter to make room for the vent tube so there was no obstruction. John figured the filter was either pluged or too dense therefor it pulled vapor and oil out of the valve cover circulating the oil back through the front carb. I also read that you should move the vent tube location on the Volkes can eliminating the need to modify the filter. Kris |

Kris, Hard acceleration pull more air but it also adds pressure in the crankcase. Check your road draft pipe. Sounds like you have pressure building up in your crank case that is blowing oil into the air cleaners. I use Fram's too and haven't had the issue you desribe. I've had other cars with this type of issue. Since these were on their last legs, I just ran a plastic flex tube from the oil fill back under the car. The breather smoked more than the exhaust. If you have a PVC valve instead of a road draft, then the diaphram is probably shot. If your PO blessed you with a Heinz 57 crankcase ventilation system, then you may have to be more creative. Bill |
