MG MGA - front shock absorber

Gentlemen, The shaft through the housing on
the front left shock has excessive play,
resulting in a knocking on rough surfaces.
Can the casting be bored out and rebushed,
[providing the shaft is OK.] Is there an oil seal here, or would it be more
economical to source an exchange unit.
Regards, Ron.

Ron, it really takes special tooling and knowledge to disassemble and rebuild a lever shock. I'd either source another one or buy a set of rebuilt units from Peter Caldwell here in the US. The shipping would be a bit I suppose, but he is the very best and his rebuilt shocks are literally better than new when he finishes with them. He has the tooling to bore the housing, install a delrin bushing and sleeve the shaft to take a true lip type seal. His units are guaranteed for life as long as you use the correct weight oil and the shocks come already filled and ready to go. I installed a pair on my midget last winter and they are great. http://www.nosimport.com/ I don't know if he has a distributor for his shocks in OZ, I know that he does in GB.

Ron,

I see your from NT, hence your asking how to fix them yourself.
I found getting them reconditioned in Perth was so expensive it was easier to buy new from UK.

I had some reconditioned a few years ago in UK and they were about £30 each. The postage was almost more.

If your really stuck you can change the arms on your MGA ones with and MGB but beyond most home mechanics.

reconditioned MGB are alot cheaper in UK:

The MGB shocks are a little taller and will require additional clearance to the inner fender.

The B shocks do NOT require any fender modifications, but to get them in you have to remove the studs from the chassis and replace them with coarse threaded bolts to hold the shocks in.

If you want original shocks, Brown & Gammons had the best deal a few months ago when I replaced mine. They do make a core charge, but even with that, they were still hugely less expensive than the other suspects.
