MG MGA - Fumes In The Garage

For several weeks now I have noticed strong oily-based fumes lingering in the garage after running the old girl. ( I also get the same after a drive in the MGA!) Some of you may also remember a recent thread from me about the white residue inside the rocker box.

This week I noticed that the car was not pulling its best and was reluctant to run on all 4 cylinders whilst cold. Well, all is revealed. I took the carbs off yesterday to renew all the cork seals, inspect, clean up and retune. First thing I noticed was the amount of oily residue around the front carb and filter. And then the culprit was revealed - one of the couplings on the throttled spindle had eased off a bit causing the front carb to gradually get out of sync with the rear. I am guessing that by yesterday the front carb was barely opening, leaving the rear carb to do all the work. Apart from the poor running this was also preventing the rocker box (and tappet case on my enclosed set-up) to vent freely back into the engine. Net result was the oily residue and smell.

The car goes brilliantly now. Her in doors also ok!

Steve Gyles

My friend Steve Gyles had serious engine trouble.
Looking real hard almost made him see double.

Seems his MGA didn’t want to run on all four
Beloved SU’s were at the problem root and core

Oily front carb residue was the real clue
That tipped Steve off about just what to do

A loose throttle spindle let only one carb work
Finding the problem almost drove Steve berserk

But all is now well and his car runs a treat
Just goes to show that MGA’s cant be beat

I guess I asked for that! Good effort. Is Steve Simmons still cataloging all your efforts?

Snow not melted yet?

Steve Gyles: Steve Simmons has compiled a selection of my MGA related poems. He seems to choose the longer (and perhaps "better" ones) for his website. Cheers! Glenn
PS while we do have a bit of snow, the weather here is slowly improving.
