MG MGA - gearbox lock up

I have just rebuilt my gearbox. On testing prior to installation i have an intermittent problem when selecting 3rd & 4th, in that the box locks up completely - turning the input shaft is impossible. Deselecting and going into 1st or 2nd is fine and occasionally 3rd and 4th might not lock up. I have 0.005 end float on the laygear. Any ideas?

Hi Colin. It sounds like it is possible that 2 gears are trying to engage at one time. You might want to check that the fork retaining screws are tight, and that the tips of the screws are fitting properly into the notches on their respective shafts. Glenn

Colin; Your problem is most likely the selector mechanisum just under the shift tower. A pincer shaped device controls which sh*ter shaft may move. The pincher wears at the tips , creating too much clearance. The pieces in engages get worn too, Good luck, Bill.

Colin,
This happened to me a couple years ago when I rebuilt my gearbox. I would bolt it together and then could not turn the shaft. I turned out that I had reversed the fitting that goes on the front end of the shaft and there wasn't enough clearance when fitted the wrong way. I am writing this from Finland and have no diagrams here, or I could name the part, but it slides on the shaft front end.
Good luck,

Thanks Guys. It transpired that the Sliding hub on the mainshaft was the wrong way round!
