MG MGA - Gearbox side plate screws
Anyone know where I can get a couple replacement screws for the sideplate on the gearbox? Looks to be a 1/2" length, 5/16" diameter, 20 TPI, countersunk screw. Moss doesn't sell them. |

Are you sure about the 20TPI? It has been a while since I did my gearbox, but I believe most of the bolts and screws were standard sizes. If they are 5/16-18, you should be able to get them at any good hardware store. If they are 5/16-24, you may have to look a little, but you should be able to get them locally. |

Rich, I think I have several extra with a bunch of tranny parts. I will check the parts bin. How many do you need and what is your address. Email me offline. Have a good day! John |

These are one of the few places where you will find a true Whitworth bolt on an MGA. They were used when threading into aluminum such as the transmission case. They are 18 TPI, which is the same as UNC but the thread form is a bit different. In an unstressed application like this you could probably get by with UNC. I have 4 spare transmissions (but only one usable laygear)and could send what you need if nothing else turns up. jdew@hfx.eastlink.ca |
