MG MGA - GM MG

Don't know if anyone has been following the GM/SAIC saga on the MG General thread, but maybe here in Australia we will be able to buy our new MG's at the local Holden dealer! What with badge engineering, we might have an MG HSV,,,a Bathurst winner!!

I think someone got their wires crossed. Even if SAIC were to buy GM 100% I don't believe it would be merged with their own brands. They also have a 50% joint venture with Volkswagen as well as dozens of other automotive companies.

There has been talk in the press of an MG saloon based on a Buick design. It was floating around a few weeks ago.

Aren't SAIC building Buicks in China for GM?..things starting to make sense.
Gary Lock

No, SAIC and GM have a 50/50 JV that builds Buick and Chevrolet badged models. They have the same with VW and dozens of others, mainly first tier parts suppliers.

This should not be confused with their own brand car manufacturing.

They were previously share holders in Chinese car manufacturer Chery that produced the QQ a direct rip off of the Daewoo Matiz or Chevrolet Spark (the cars had over 50% interchangeable parts - including doors!) Apparently they disassociated themselves before the fan was hit.

They have sold almost 150,000 MG and Roewe saloons in the first 11 months of this year and they will no doubt want to increase the product range so co-operation over a new model or badge engineering would be pretty normal. All manufacturers are doing that together all the time.
