MG MGA - Good MG Mechanic in NYC area
Greetings! I just sold my 1957 MGA to a gentleman in the NYC area. He had an MGA as his first car and finally decided he was ready for some more fun! He indicated that he was not mechanically inclined at all and would be looking for someone to work on the car for him. Anyone know of a good MG or general mechanic who really takes care of his customers? I'm trying to put together a little MGA survival kit for him. I'm sure there are some good clubs in the area that would love a new member. Thanks for your help! KC

I live in Putnam Valley, about 50 miles North of NYC. I am a member of the Eastern New York MGA Club. I would certainly recommend it to a new owner of an MGA. There are members all around NYC and surroundings. It would certainly be helpful to know a little more specifically where this person is located as far as the mechanic is concerned. Two people in the "NYC area" could be two hours apart. And of course, he should get online and introduce himself! Some info and application to ENYMGA can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/enymgaclub/index.html

If your friend lives in Manhattan he will probably have a difficult time getting to the suburbs to have his MG worked on. When I lived there I used to drive 45 minutes to New Jersey where my mechanic lived, and had to take a train home and back to pick it up afterwards. Few people who live in Manhattan own cars, so getting a friend to give you a ride is not an easy option. M & G Vintage Auto in Tuxedo, NY (Rockland county, just north of NYC) is a reputable dealer and near the Metro North train line. You'll have a hard time finding another place close to NYC. I don't know if Cooper Classics on Perry Street in Greenwich Village still does repairs, you might try them also (www.cooperclassics.com) but I think they mainly sell and rent cars for film/TV production.

I think M&G is out of the brit car business and is just working on jap stuff. Contact the EAstern NY MGA people, they will send you in the right direction.

Some shameless self promotion to follow.......... I get customers from the NYC area all the time. In fact I have an MGA in here for restoration that is owned by a NYer. Check out my site and photo gallery, perhaps I can help. I'm 60 miles south of NYC Pete www.motorcar-garage.com |

I would be absolutely shocked to find that M&G has gotten out of the British car scene; that was the only thing they did, specializing in T-series stuff. I am not at home where the phone numbers for the following resources are but I can offer the following partial info: There is a place in Tarrytown, NY called GP Abingdon (they are located next to the asphalt plant on the Hudson River) who do lots of work on all sorts of cars, including restoration, on MGs. I bought my MGA and my wife's '49 Jeepster from them. "Greg" is the man to talk to. In West Milford, NJ a guy named Rob Medinsky runs a small shop specializing in MGs. I can't remember the business name. He has a good local reputation. My personal experience has been limited to buying some pieces from one of his parts cars for my 'BGT. I learned about him via the guy from whom I purchased the GT and for whom Medinsky replaced the rocker panels on what is now my car (the work looks good). There is another place that specializes on British cars although I have had no experience with them. They are on the east-bound of Rte. 46 in (I believe) Lodi. The place is always populated by MGs, Triumphs, and Jags of various description. Probably worth investigating - I'm sure they could do the work.

Rob Medynski is the mechanic who I used to take my old B to in New Jersey (I bought it from him), his shop was named MGT in West Milford. I don't think he is in the business anymore. His cousin runs M&G in nearby Tuxedo but I don't believe they were ever on speaking terms... There is also an MG guy in the Bronx whose name escapes me now. But my friend in Manhattan (who bought my B) had to take it all the way to Smithtown, Long Island beacuse he had such a hard time finding a decent British car mechanic close to the city for a reasonable price. Unfortunately none of the places mentioned are convenient for Manhattanites except the ones close to public transportation (or unless you have two cars -- unusual for NYC -- and a willing friend).

Hello all! I just found out that the gentleman who purchased my car lives in Whitestone, NY. Anybody close by? Thanks, Kelly

hmmm Whitestone is in Queens so the abovementioned suggestions are even farther away than from Manhattan. Try http://www.mgcars.org.uk/garages/New_York.html - the shop in Corona is closest, those in the Bronx and Brooklyn are also good bets. The king of SU carbs, Joe Curto, is also nearby, he might be able to recommend a place in the area.

Whitestone is part of Queens, NYC. The place in Bronx would be closest of those noted above. Second closest, probably Tarrytown, then Lodi, then Smithtown, then Tuxedo, the West Milford. Medynski was in business in 2002, I'm not certain about now.

Rob Medinsky's business was MGT's in West Milford NJ. He did a good job on the mechanicals of my MGA last March. He was is the process of selling the business and moving to Vermont or New Hampshire. The new owners intended to carry on with MGs. I don't know how the business is doing now. Dan

Well, there's a whole boatload of disappointing information in the last couple of links. The quality of life continues to deteriorate. M&G has been around since at least 1976 when they were located in Ridgewood, NJ. Another institution off the team. I'll have to investigate the new owners of MGT to see if they are really happening. Guess I'll have to make a note of this Bob Millstein fellow. Later.

I found the place that worked on my '62 restoration on that link mentioned above (http://www.mgcars.org.uk/garages/New_York.html) and made the poor choice of picking the closest one to my house - Sports Car Haven in St. James, and they were recommended by a chap in the local MG club. He later admitted he had no experience with them, just knew the owner "as a nice guy". I am still fixing mistakes in fuel, hydraulics and electrical they made, some just outright dangerous (e.g. carb overflow pointed right at exhaust!) and as a result I have absolutely nothing good to say about them. At 50 miles into their engine rebuild I now have a rather large oil leak that I'm tracing down. During and after a run there is a steady drip of oil coming off the crossmember just behind the engine, under the transmission (probably the rear seal?). If anyone can recommend a competent MGA mechanic in Suffolk county, NY, I am all ears! - Ken
