MG MGA - Headlamp flasher
There was recently a thread regarding the headlamp flasher fitted as an option on US cars. I am going to purchase one of the Holden spring loaded switches to put a flasher system on my car...I have asked what relay would be suitable for this switch, as the original setup had a relay (Lucas part #33135B). Holden have advised that a relay is not necessary with this switch, as after all , all it does is virtually switch the headlights on for a few seconds. What was the purpose of a relay in the original setup? |

The relay would protect the switch from the high current required for the headlights and the ensuing arcing when the switch opens. A relay may not be needed, but it is something that I would use in that it is easier to replace than the switch if it dies from the heavy current and arcing. There is a Bosh style cube relay that has two output terminals that make it easy to hook up to headlights, unfortunately, I don' have a part number. Perhaps if Dan Masters is reading the boards, he can jump in with that information. Cheers - Dave |

Bosch relays are as follows: Five terminal with bracket and two output spade connections - Bosch # 0 332 019 150 - SPST contact action, 40 amps. Five terminal with bracket and two output spade connections - Bosch # 0 332 209 150 - SPDT contact action, 40 amps. Four terminal with bracket and one output spade connection - Bosch # 0 332 019 110 - SPST contact action, 50 amps. Waytek Inc. at www.waytekwire.com is a good source of parts for automotive electrical projects. -M.S. |

I used a Bosch relay. Four of the terminals are used #85 white = 12v hot all time #86 Black = flasher on dash #30 Blue = 12v hot all time to flasher switch #87 Yellow= Headlight dipper switch on the floor The Bosch unit has a plastic wire assembly that can be bought so it just slides on the relay with out having to use electrical spades. The colors listed above are the colors on the wire assembly. The key thing is the number on the list above to go to source as listed above. The Lucus flasher switch that was on e-bay last month was bought by me. This is how I wired it up. |
