MG MGA - High tourque starter WOW
Hi All Well I vowed I would not suffer thru another summer of sporadic starter problems and stuffed a new unit in the 1600. Wow what a difference. Sounds like crap but the car starts in a fraction of the time. EVERY TIME. I had always wondered about my tuning abilities before but it was just the old starter wheezing the engine up to speed. I love to be a purist but some things (lucas) are not worth the trouble. As mentioned it does sound like a new Japenese import (well it is a new Japenese starter) but fortunately the muffler noise quickly covers that up. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it a good 8 with the only strike against it the sound and cost. ralph |

Ralph, I've been considering the same thing. I also understand that they grab from the other side of the flywheel gear ring. I'm also considering an alternator w/ self-contained regulator in lieu of the old Lucus setup. Your thoughts? Thanks for the input. Larry |

I installed such a starter seven years ago and never looked back. One added benefit is that if ever you have to remove and replace this compact starter, you don't have to remove the oil filter. It slips down through the top of the engine bay (on left side steering cars). |

Larry Check the A and B archives. LOTS of stuff on the alternator question. Bob M has a web site with the Bosch conversion details. Others out there also, all referenced in the archives. HTH Larry |
