MG MGA - Hood/Bonnet latching assembly help!!

I have all the necessary parts to finally complete the latching mechanism for my hood. However, I can not figure out how all the pieces go together.

Does anyone have a diagram that can help?

There is a full exploded diagram in the BMC Service Parts List page R18. I don't have a scanner but I can post a picture tomorrow (in the daylight) if nobody beats me to it. Mike

Is your grill off? If something goes wrong after you shut the hood and you need to access the lock it is hard to do with with the grill in place.

Both Moss and British Victoria show all you need in their catalogs. Page 40 BV Pape 48 Moss.

Gerard. Please make sure your grille is not installed whilst you get the latch and bonnet working. Other wise you may not be ato access the latch if you need to, unless your engine isnt in.

Thank you all.

L. Mazoway,
The diagram is helpful but I'm not sure what goes above and what goes underneath the latch hole. Do you have any idea?
gerard hutchinson

Gerard, I took some photos of the latch assembly on my car, perhaps they will help you. One is here, I'll PM you the others.

Photo didn't load properly, I'll try again.

Bill & Bill, This will be a huge help!

thanks!!

Bill Young,

In your picture the little tab on the bottom bracket is facing the spring. On some cars I've seen it facing the opposite way. Is your car original or restored?

I can't figure out which way is correct.
L. Mazoway

That tab is the right way around in the picture. It prevents the peg from moving off center to be caught underneath when the spring bar is pulling on the peg. The tab could just as well be e complete tubular extrusion, but may have been more difficult to form that way to such a depth without splitting the metal.

If you reference Bill's first picture or the diagram from the Guru, I am missing the bottom most piece. I am also missing the metal piece that connects to the hood itself. I do not believe any of the aftermarket suppliers has this part for sale.

Does anyone have a spare for sale?
gerard hutchinson

It's the same for a midget or a B, so parts should be really easy to find.

There are also thick round spacers that you are probably missing

Gerard, -- I have those parts spare. I have almost a complete latch assembly, upper and lower parts, short draw rod and bell crank arm with hardware, parts that attach to the bonnet, and all safety latch parts. What's missing is the thin guide plate on top, Moss #470-940 (broken but less than $5 new). I don't have the longer draw rod, but I think I have a drawing of it, just a bent rod with one drilled hole for split pin and flat washer. Click the email link after my name and send me your snail mail address.

Barney,
Excellent!! I'll email you right away!
