MG MGA - Identification plates
I've been trying to find someone to stamp the correct numbers on replacement chassis and smiths heater decal plates without success. engineers used to have letter and number stamps but they seem to be long gone. I approached an engraver to see if he would do it but he thought I was up to no good! In any event engraving won't replicate the original stamping on the chassis plate. Any ideas from MGA owners that have been here? John. |

Contact Todd Clarke in the US. He is in Penn. You should look in the archives to get his e-mail. He did mine and they look like the original. Ask for his catalog as he has many small parts no one else makes |

Todd requires a proof of ownership--but he does a job that can't be told from an original. He uses the proper raised lettering in the correct size. |

John, You can buy sets of letter and number punches either individually or as set's. You then need to practice using them on a scrap piece of metal before doing it for real on the plate. Sometimes the digits are not square on the punch. The secret is to clamp a piece of wood on the plate so you can rest the punches agaist it which gives you a nice neat line. Make sure you retain the old plate. Regards...John Bray |

The problem with number and lettering punches is that they create a depressed symbol--where the original is a raised letter. You need a machine like the ones used to punch out military dog tags, that creates a raised letter. |

Hi John The chassis plate can be punched with ordinary number punches, these are available from tool supplies or auto jumbles, I think they are 1/4 ". Todd Clark can do reverse stamping for engine ID plates. I had one done by Mini Spares in Gloucester. Your heater plate can be engraved. Terry |

I would skip the jewelry engraver and sorted die punches and go visit your local tool and die shop in your town. They can easily set the plate up and engrave it on a CNC mill in no time flat. All you need is an example of the text size and location. A picture or an old plate would work. A local shop engraved my "Marston and Excelsior" radiator ID plate last week using a picture out of a book and it came out perfect. Don |
