MG MGA - Ignition coil
I am replacing the coil to my '60 A. The old one has a crackin it. Any suggestion on the type and brand of coil to use. I want this to be a solid driver. I have bought most of my parts from Scarborough Faire in teh past. Do I need a coil from one of the cataloges or will one from Auto Zone, etc work as well? Thanks Jack |

Be sure to buy a coil for a "non ballasted" ignition system. I am using a "Sport Coil" and have a pertronix instead of points. It's working great. |

Hi Jack. I use a Bosch ignition coil , and it works great. I have used lucas sport coils with good success also. Cheers! GLenn |

I replaced mine with a Pertronix sports coil two years ago, and the difference was immediately noticable. The car was pretty sluggish, and after I changed the coil, it would peel out if I hit the gas too hard. |

A few days ago, I spoke with Cecilia at Scarborough Faire about a sport coil. She thinks they have practically no effect on performance except at very high RPMs. However, she did advise me to check the age of my coil and consider replacing it with a new, standard coil. She said that the old Lucas coils actually contain some oil or grease (?) which can leak or dry out and hinder performance of the coil. So, those of you that noticed a performance boost by switching from an old Lucas coil to a sport coil may have experienced the same boost by switching to a new, standard coil. FWIW. M.D. '57 Coupe |

Yeah, but the sport coil is "GOLD" colored and looks "sporty!! |

Ed: I agree. That's why I called Scarborough Faire in the first place! M.D. '57 Coupe |
