MG MGA - Installing a new flasher unit (GFU2101)

Hi everyone,
I am about to replace the indicator flasher unit and I just thought I would ask if anyone knew how it is usually fastened to the bulkhead?

Normally, I would just have a look under the dash to check this, but I am waiting for an operation on my knees.
This means that if I get under the dashboard to start the job, I will probably never be able to get myself out! :^(

If the unit is attached by either a self-tapping screw or a setscrew into a captive nut, then I manage to replace the unit from the engine compartment.
But if it involves me worming myself under the dash to attach a nut, then I am "stuffed" !
Cheers

Hi Colyn

Things change with age. The best approach is to look inside the engine compartment and see what your options are. I imagine that the flasher fixing is by a screw from the engine side rather than dash side.

The aftermarket Lucas lookalike flasher units are miserable things, the original had tapped terminals but the aftermarket has tiddly little screws and loose nuts. Good luck with fitting these.

I have four way hazard flashers and used a non-lookalike flasher unit hidden behind the dash. The original is still in situ for the sake of originality with dummy wiring.

Best wishes for your knees, I hope the operations are successful and you can continue to enjoy your car.

Cheers

Hi Colyn - Sorry to hear of your knees - I'm going through similar mobility issues myself.

On our car the flasher is fastened from the rear with a nut, and in order to replace it I've had to ask Melon to hold the screw against the firewall in the engine compartment and then crawl under to attach and tighten the nut.

UnfortunateIy I expect this is the common method.

I hope your recovery goes swiftly and say Hi to Chris!

Sorry about your knees. Hope you have them sorted shortly.
We moved home recently and until the drive is sorted, I have had to store the MGA elsewhere so cannot check for you.
Hopefully someone else will be able to answer your question but if not, I will hopefully collect the car in about a week so will be able to find the answer.

I just checked the parts list (attached), and I am afraid it appears that it is a nut and bolt job.

I cannot add anything to the flasher unit so I'll make do with my knee. Hope yours goes ok!

Thanks for the tech info and the best wishes, it looks like replacing the flasher unit will have to wait until my mobility improves a little.

Healthwise, it appears that I need both replacement left ankle and left knee joints.

My knee was damaged in a serious motorcycle accident over 50 years ago which also broke my femur. The ankle joint has become worn out because the femur healed about 10 degrees out of alignment and in compensating for this, has caused excessive wear in the ankle joint.
I don't suppose 50 years of racquet sports, marathon running, dinghy sailing, mountaineering and skiing has helped things too much! :^)

Unfortunately, I have also developed a recent problem with my Right knee which has suddenly become so stiff that I can't bend it.
If you saw me walking you would be reminded of John Cleese doing his famous Ministry of Silly Walks sketch! :^)

My MGA is due for its MOT next week and so I will take it and see if it passes, I know the car is now exempt from MOTs but I still prefer to have someone else check the car over, just for peace of mind.

Cheers

Sorry to hear all that Colyn. It's just solved a problem... you won't be able to drive the MGA anymore, so for the 2025 Ireland Tour (assuming it goes ahead), Anita and I can run it for you..LOL.
