MG MGA - Judsons for sale

I am aware of two Judson kits for sale

1. in North America, Folchi renovation but has metal can style oiler rather than the valve cover. Otherwise complete and perfect. Photos available

2. is in Europe, also freshly rebuilt, but not by George, and complete with valve cover, so complete. Photos also available for this one

If you want more details or contacts, drop me a mail

I have now added a page on my site for listing Judsons for sale with photos

Great idea Dominic. I hadn't realized the prices that these units are now demanding. It makes me realize what a deal I got on the unit I bought last fall.

After patiently waiting, I recieived my rebuilt kit this past weekend. Based on your advice, I had the carb (actually two) redone by IHOnly North and the rest of the work was done by George Folchi. Both did really did great work. It looks like a brand new unit. I can't wait to install it, but due to other things going on that has to wait until mid-May.

Here's a 'before' picture of what the kit looked like when I bought it.

...and here's the 'after' photo of the freshly rebuilt unit.

I see you have a single belt drive while mine has a dual belt. Does anyone know why the difference? Did they start off being single belt drive and change to dual?
Just wondering, Dave
David Godwin

I was a bit confused by the pulley arrangement in the "after" photo as well. In the "before" photo it looks standard.

What is the change, and why?

When you come to fitting it, can I recommend a perusal of this page first:

http://clancy.ch/Judson_Photos.html

Most importantly, turn the fan through a full revolution before starting to make sure that you have clearance for every blade.

I will be fitting it to an early 5 main bearing engine which uses a harmonic balancer on the crank rather than the simple MGA pulley. George has supplied a newly made bottom pulley which nests into the harmonic balacer (see photo) along with a new top pulley. It is designed to use a single belt which, according to George, is more than sufficient.

Andy Bounsall

Here you can see the new bottom pulley 'nested' into the harmonic balancer.

Andy Bounsall

Andy,
Your setup looks very interesting. It looks like you will be "overdriving" the supercharger as the crank pulley looks larger diameter than the compressor pulley. Is this so? I presume the overdriving is to accomodate the larger displacement 1800 engine. Can you share the diamaeters of the drive and driven pulleys with us? It will be most interesting to here of your results and impressions when the installation is complete. I am anxious with questions such as
What is the initial compression ratio, what are your distributor and timing specs, what is the measured boost pressure. I hope that you can share with us the results of your project.
James Johanski

James, the drive pulley (on the crank) is 5". The driven pulley (on the blower) is 4". Engine is an 18GB, bored to .030. Compression ratio is 8.75:1. I'll let you know the measured boost, etc after I have it all put together.
Andy Bounsall

Andy, do you have a gauge?

dominic clancy

No I don't Dominic. Do you know of one for sale? Email me (bounsalla at taske dot com) if you like.
Andy Bounsall

Is there something special about a Judson gauge? Can't you use one from say, Canadian Tire?
Art Pearse

you can use any gauge that's accurate, but "if you want to be original, you must have a Judson". Dominic has pretty well duplicated it at a fraction of the repop cost.
Mike Parker

I am mulling a "new improved" approach to the gauge face to replace the card overlay I have at the moment.

I have laid my hands on some ink-jet printable decal paper. Only problem is that you can't print white. Then the inspiration dawned - just print the black parts of the face face, leave the rest transparent (dead easy in photoshop) and spray the background (the gauge face surface) white to create the white lettering. Apply the decal, goal is a perfect repro gauge face.

I'm almost ready to do a dummy run. The paper is very expensive, so I'll make as many as I can fit on a sheet and then start creating. I have two spare needles and two genuine Marsh casings, so if you want to send me the gauge guts (just a standard Autometer gauge as shown on my page) I'll knock you one together as soon as I know the process will work - though I have no reason to think that it won't.
dominic clancy

That'd be fantastic Dominic! I'll take a look at your site to see what kind of Auto Meter guage I need to source and contact you off line to make arrangements.
Andy Bounsall

Dominic,
Are you able to get some sealer for the inkjet surface? I'm thinking that the ambient humidity may cause the colors to eventually wash. If you can get some Polaroid sealer (the type used on old 104 film) or something similar, you might want to do that.
Mike Parker

I think I will just use a standard Decal sealer from the local model shop

I tried clear acrylic lacquer on a different decal, and it just bubbled, so I will not be trying that again
dominic clancy

Andy,
Thank you for the pulley information.
Dominic,
I anxiously await your progress on the new gauge face.
I tried printing on photo paper the face that show on your website, but the resolution is a bit low and the clarity was not the best. Do you have a higher resolution file?
James Johanski

Just doctored the 15lb face in photoshop - is a bit sharper.

There's one also on ebay, 270750996478, but in a very sorry sate - the idler arm has been snapped, and the inlet manifold has been butchered. I don't think it is worth what it is currently fetching, as it will be very hard to find the missing arm unless you already have one, and the inlet manifold ears have been so butchered it probably won't seal too well.

It is also missing crank pulley, rad spacers, carb will need a re-work, and the fan spacer is also not to be seen.

If someone just needs the bits that are there, good luck.
dominic clancy

Well that pile of cr*p went for $1600 US - definitely not worth that much.
dominic clancy

Wow. Talk about silly money!
Andy Bounsall

Andy
I have just picked up another Marsh gauge that is basically the same as a genuine Judson one.
Cost : $35 US

It makes no sense to ship it here and ship it to you, so please contact me offline and we can arrange the business bit.

Johanski's transfers are the business. The only thing you have to do is use a punch plier to put the holes for rivets, stop and needle in the transfer, spray the gauge face white, and then apply the transfer. Looks totally original. Spray the needle at the same time
dominic clancy

I sent you an email Dominic.
Andy Bounsall

Dominic, I sent you two emails on this subject but got no reply. Did you not receive them?
Andy Bounsall

Hi Andy

Nothing received, but also no gauge received either. Have to get round to doing the ebay claim thing....

Dominic
dominic clancy

Hmm, that's odd. Are you still dominic at clancy dot ch? Anyway, please send details to me: andy dot bounsall at taske dot com. Thanks.
