MG MGA - Le Mans 2005

Hi everyone

Who is going to Le Mans with the MGCC ? It would be nice to know a few names beforehand. I recieved the final instructions from George Dutton yesterday, seems like its going to be a good event.

Hi Steve

Unfortunatly ( fortunatly? )you won't see me at Abingdon, I can't get away until Wednesday, I hope to catch up with you all at Argentan in the afternoon. I'll look out for you.

I think I will be knackered by end of the first day! Coming down from Preston to Abingdon for 1100 (1300 flag off by original team members), then down to Folkestone for the reception at 1900 hours. I will have done about 330 miles. But all great fun. See you at Argentan for the evening reception on Wednesday?

Will be there in my 1960 Chariot Red Roadster (MFF 888) going down with a blue Ferrari 308 on the overnight Portsmouth-Caen route. Am camping at Karting Nord which I gather is a popular campsite for other MGA owners. Unfortunately, not arriving until Friday though.

Hope to take my Twin Cam if I can fix the oil leak I paid Brown and Gammons £140 for... If not my old 911 may have to do the trick.

Leaving Friday after work.
Anyone else heading down Friday ?

Thanks

Mark,

Your website has a blank for the number of YD3 Twin Cams built (LHD Roadster). My list gives 1293 as the total of YD3 cars.
Of course YD3 cars are not only the US cars, but also European and others.

Mick

Thanks Mick.
Working in IT, the last thing I want to do is turn my computer on after work, so I must have forgotten to update this the other week.
1 of 1293 doesn't look that impressive dose it...
maybe 1 of 1000 red twin cam's is slightly better.
Cheers <MARK>

Hi,
I'll be starting from Abingdon in VPO 320, Old English White roadster. Camping in Technoparc. Just finished putting the 5 gear box in and realised I havent got time to re-calibrate the speedo! (Seemed to be going awfully fast in 5th with a reading of only 50mph). Route from Abingdon passes my house after about 25 miles so I can go back for all those last minute bits.
See you all on the start line.

Dave

Although I'll be there, I'm taking the family so it won't be in the 'A' this year.

I wish you all the best for a safe journey and hope the weather is just right, not so hot the 'A' overheats but also warm enough to make it plesant. I've done Le Mans in the rain in an NGA and it wasn't much fun.

As Bob West will be there I don't expect you will have any problems. In the unlikely event anyone gets stranded my mobile number is 07767 707141.

Hi Dave

Your 5 speed conversion with standard diff (4.3:1) gives you approx 20 mph per 1000 RPM in 5th gear. I'm running a 3.9:1 diff with a 5 speed which gives 23mph per 1000 RPM also a new engine of 1892cc. I'm still running it in, so I'm restricted to 4000 RPM (92 mph).
Do they have speed camera's in France?

John, thanks for your offer of assistance, I hope nobody needs it. See you all there

Terry I have to agree with her!!!
Bob (robert)

I agree...
Arrivaderci is Italian too...

Try "Bonjour Johndam" if your caught at 92 MPH...
Mind you they all drive like Alen Prost on the motorways over there, but at least they don't hang in the fast lane.

That's all the frog this Ozie knows...
Oh I can say "Due Baggett" too and food arrives...

See you all there, I'm on the 15:30 ferry on Friday.

Cheers <MARK>

According to the itinerary a visit is planned to a Calvedos distillery and a Camembert farm.

Does anyone have any idea which ones, an internet sesrch throws up a number of each and I wondered if any were recommended?

Have a great trip guys. We would love to be with you, but because the MGA celebrations are spread out over 3 months we cannot afford the extra time. Our cars left Brisbane last weekend, and Ian Priors (Sebring #44) leaves Melbourne this weekend. All 3 Australian cars should be in UK in time for Silverstone, and will be doing all of the Tour of Britain later.
See you all at Silverstone.
Gary, David & Ian.

Tons of us State-side, and elsewhere, can only dream of going, Wish you all the best, have a safe & wonderful time. Steve.

For those going to the cocktail party and dinner on the Wednesday courtesy of the Argentan city officials, the rig is smart casual. They understand the difficulty of packing dinner jackets and/or long dresses into an MGA!

Steve
Steve Gyles

Steve,

You strike me as a man of the world with your service background and slightly off-beat but interesting questions on this bulletin board.

But I have always been puzzled by the term 'smart casual' does it mean clean jeans as opposed to those you have worked on the car in? and a plain tee shirt without any captions?

We have smart casual days at work on Fridays. I turn up in the above attire but others arrive in there suit as usual but without a tie!!

Regards...John Bray
J Bray

John

The 'smart casual' were George Dutton's words to me. My interpretation is open neck shirt (with or without crevat!), long or short sleeve; slacks as opposed to jeans, and shoes rather than trainers. However, at the end of the day I guess it's what you will feel comfortable in, mingling with our French hosts. I think there will be time beforehand to take a rain check on what everyone else will be wearing.

Trust this helps.

Steve

PS. In my early service days (mid to late 60s) smart casual was collar and tie, blazer and slacks. This was permitted in the officer's Mess on Wednesdays and weekends. The rest of the time it was suits. How times have changed.

Hi Steve,
re - long dresses in an MGA, I always wear one, its the only way to keep cool in a Coupe ! Mind you its not easy to dip the lights with high heels !

Seriously, did anybody see the TV program the other night about Ladette's/Ladies, they had to alight from a smart dark blue MGA roadster (hood up) and keep their modesty intact at the same time, mind you I don't think some of them had any in the first place. Anybody recognise the car?

Bonjour pour favor
( I think I'm beginning to get to grips with my French )

Je préfère aller torse nu moi-même. Voyez-vous sur la ligne de début le lundi. Beaucoup attendant avec intérêt l'événement et un verre ou deux de vin français.

Bonsoir Steve

I'm afraid you've lost me there, my French is hopeless, mind you, I got the bit about the wine. I'm glad somebody knows some French.

Terry Drinkwater

Tony

I don't. There are some good websites where you type in English, then ask for a translation into whatever language you want!!

This is the one I used. http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Plenty out there for free.

Steve / All,

Any pictures from yesterday to spur me on.

I'm not leaving till midday Friday and still wrestling with fitting a hood after work each night.

Got my T-Shirt, Hat and Rally plate last night though.

Cheers <MARK>

I head over to Le Mans tonight. For those not already left you can get in the mood by listening to some Radio Le Mans!!! You get the cars revving their engines and roaring past in the background when the presenters are talking.
