MG MGA - locking washer

Can anyone explain how the washer on the front of the crankshaft can lock the crank nut when the washer just seems to spin on the end of the crank. There is a notch in the washer but it does not seem to go into any grove. After you put the nut on you can bend over a tab but it seems to me that the whole thing would just spin because the slot does not catch anything.

There is an indent in the crankshaft pulley, if you turn the edge of the washer down slightly it will engage with the indent which stops the washer turning, you the turn part of the washer up against a flat on the pulley nut. You can also "help" the washer into the indent with a blunt chisel.

The indent on the pulley can be seen on Barney's website.

The combination of turning up the washer against one of the flats on the nut and using a punch to force the edge of the washer into the indent in the pulley completes the locking action.

I guess what you are saying is that the tab should be bent like the tab on the camshaft. The tab goes into the slot on the pully not on the crankshaft. Thanks for the help.
